Michel Legrand made his fame and fortune from writing for films, but he has done significant work in jazz on an occasional basis. In 1957, he arranged a set of dixieland and swing standards for a French orchestra (recorded on Philips), in 1958 he used three different all-star groups for the classic Legrand Jazz (with such sidemen as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Phil Woods, Herbie Mann, Bill Evans, Ben Webster, Art Farmer and others), in 1968 he recorded a strictly jazz set with a trio and Legrand has written for albums led by Stan Getz (1971), Sarah Vaughan (1972), and on several occasions, Phil Woods. Several of his songs (such as "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life", "Watch What Happens" and "The Summer Knows") have been recorded many times by jazz musicians.
The Dream

You go a wondering, wandering
Stumbling, tumbling, round! round!
When will you find
What's on the tip of your mind?
Why are you blind
To all you ever were
Never were, really are, nearly are?
Will you ever be done traveling
Always unraveling you, you?
Running away could lead you further astray
And as for fishing in streams for pieces of dreams
Those pieces will never fit
What is the sense of it?
Little boy blue, don't let your little sheep roam
It's time ,come blow your horn, meet the morn
Look and see, can you be far from home?
The lyrics of Michel Legrand's song "Pieces Of Dreams" portray the journey of self-discovery, where a little boy, lost and misguided, searches for himself. The song speaks of the emotional and spiritual journey we all must embark on to find peace, joy and a sense of purpose, in ourselves and the universe. The opening lines "Little boy lost in search of little boy found" reflects the state of mind, where despite wandering aimlessly, he has yet to find himself. There is an internal conflict that he is grappling with and still far from discovering the truth.
Further, the song highlights the struggles of the boy to find his true self, he is always running, tumbling and stumbling around, trying to figure out what he wants and what he is missing in life. The lyrics suggest that the boy is blinded by his past, his current situation, and his perception of reality; this prevents him from seeing what he always has been and what he can become. The song also emphasizes that the pieces of dreams he is searching for, can never fit and make sense, because true self-discovery lies beyond what one can see, touch, and feel. As the song comes to an end, a message of hope is conveyed, urging the boy not to be lost anymore, and to let go of his fears and tooting his horn, to come and meet the morning, be at peace with himself, and find the way back home.
