Diary
Micky Dolenz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I found her diary underneath the tree,
And started reading about me.
The words she'd written took me by surprise,
You'd never read them in her eyes.
Wouldn't you know it,
She wouldn't show it.

When she confronted with the writing there,
Simply pretended not to care.
I passed it off as just in keeping with,
Her total disconcerting air.
Wouldn't you know it,
She wouldn't show it.

And as I go through my life,
I will give to her, my wife,
All the sweet things I can find.

I found her diary underneath the tree,
And started reading about me.
The words began to stick and tears to flow,
Her meaning now was clear to see.

And though she tried to hide,
The love that she denied.
The love she'd waited for,
Was someone else not me.

Wouldn't you know it, (not me)
She wouldn't show it.
Wouldn't you know it, (somebody else not me)
She wouldn't show it.

And as I go through my life,
I will wish for her, his wife,
All the sweet things she can find.
All the sweet things they can find.

I found her diary underneath the tree,
Wouldn't you know it...

Overall Meaning

The song "Diary" by Micky Dolenz tells the story of a man who finds his lover's diary under a tree and begins reading about himself. He is surprised by the words she had written and realizes that she had been hiding her true feelings from him. He confronts her with the writing, but she pretends not to care. As he reflects on his life, he promises to show his love and give his wife all the sweet things he can find. The song ends with the realization that the woman's true love was someone else, and although she tried to hide it, she couldn't deny it forever.

The lyrics in this song speak to the importance of communication and honesty in a relationship. The man in the song discovers that he had been unaware of his lover's true feelings, which she had hidden from him. It also highlights the idea of unrequited love and the pain of realizing that someone you love is in love with someone else.

Interestingly, "Diary" was written by the famous songwriting duo, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. They were known for their work on The Monkees' television show and wrote many of the band's hit songs. "Diary" was not released as a single but was included as a track on The Monkees' album "Headquarters."
