Singing into the void: Hail Internet! Behold my presence!

Mike has been playing music ever since he discovered that it was the most fun thing to do - even better than gardening, or watching cartoons. Although gardening is fairly fundamental. Vegetables are more important than music, but only just.

Since fleeing suburbia, he has been channelling himself into all manner of instruments. Despite an extended period of vowing never to enter the domain of singer songwriter-dom, it eventually happened anyway: whilst travelling in 2006, songs with words began to happen.
Mike is currently residing in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Vocally, these guys are the best trio by far. New harmonies, stronger vocals and still a great act. With all due respect to those who came before, vocally this Trio is dynamite. Saw them in Gilbert, AZ earlier this year. Excellent show, very good singing.

These guys are great. Always have been. The arrangement of this song is uniquely theirs. Though I'm not crazy about the arrangement, they perform it very well. Musicians and arrangers often have different ideas about how something should sound. It's just a different interpretation. That is one of the great things about live music vs. canned stuff. Our interpretations define us. Our musical tastes decide which version we like best. Even Frank Sinatra said, "I did it my way."

This was my favorite song in my college days. At the dorm, one of my good friends (Norman) asked me to sing this song. I sang it all and hit every note; the group was as stunned as I. The next weekend Norman drowned in a swimming accident. I'm 66 years old now and have never sung a song to another person.

The voices are not those of the original Trio, of course not, but the music is certainly evocative of Dave, Nick, and Bob. So good to hear the Trio well into the 21st Century!

Lively but faithful revisit of this KT song. Harmony and rhythm changes are welcome as is overall ensemble effort. Zorn's lead baritone is impressive. More please, debobwan.

I remember hearing this beautiful song sung by the original broadway singer on the Ed Sullivan show way back in time. I also am a big fan of the original Kingson Trio.

For close to 59 years Bob Shane and his trio have been entertaining audiences across the world. I feel Bob has always had a great knack for knowing who fit into the Kingston Trio music. By the way, George Grove and Bill Zorn from this group played with Bob for years. Rick Dougherty, on tenor guitar, replaced Glenn Yarborough in the Limeliters. Can't get much better than this. Just saw these guys in St. Louis the other night and they were fabulous. Got two standing ovations and encored for the crowd.

I can understand the consternation and emotion about these guys not being the original members, but they at least mostly do justice to the songs and keep alive an important part of early 50s Pop music, or more correctly Folk music, or Folk-pop. "Mariah", by the way is a very difficult song to do and they pull it off pretty good with a nice arrangement.

I had the pleasure of hearing the Gambell Grove Shane version of the trio and they were great! Shane busted a guitar string and complained about Martin strings. Gambell and Grove were the kindest most gracious people and I was able to have a nice chat with them. Shane was a lot more aloof. I like Shane's version of this better than this one even tho the current group has such great harmony. Re Presnell, I heard that his character was added to the film because Eastwood couldn't handle it.

George Grove was in the Trio with Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds. The other two guys are stand-ins. The instrumental artistry is as good as the original, but the voices are not those are of three men in their 70's, who we remember from better times. I miss Dave, Bob, and Nick, and the Stewart version of the Trio.

My niece is Mariah, and my Mom, her Nana sings this with Mariah, and when they get the Fire is Joe, Mariah sings The fire is Joke...lol She will be 4 in March, such a cutie!

I was Stage Manager for Mel Till for 4 yrs in Branson, Mo. This was always the last song of the show. No matter where, when, who or what, when Mel started singing "Mariah" we knew it would soon be time to go home. This is a great song. I don't like this arrangement as much as even Mel's 18 piece band arrangement. But it is still good.

I'm sorry, but the Kingston Trio who did a fine job with song was not the first to record it as they stated in this clip. In 1951 the same year as the musical came out, a group named The Mariners recorded it and it went to #30 on the Billboard charts. This was the only recording of this song to chart on Billboards Top 100.

The Broadway show, "Paint Your Wagon," told of covered wagon pioneers heading out across the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains for a new life in the Far West in the 1840s. Many did not survive this heroic undertaking. Mountain winds did sigh their death knell.

A fan since the start, saw my first concert in the old Atlanta Municipal Auditorium. Then spent my leave before going to Vietnam in 69 at the Bistro in Atl yelling "play Wildwood Flower you son of a B*&^%". At that time Bob would "Break My Mind", I thought it was one great song! Oh, and once met Bob Shane on Christmas eve about 86' in Atl. Last saw the KT about 90? when Nick rejoined for a while. So many years of great music and enjoyment. Blue skies Bob Shane,

I have been trying to find the Mariners recording of this song for over 29 years and have not found it yet. I have at last count 25 recordings of "Maria" My Favorited is by Frankie Laine and he was 85 years old when he recorded it. But then I'm one of the world's biggest Frankie Laine fans. But the are all good, no singer with out a great voice would try it.

@Badams4u Awww! :( I wouldn't say I hate this! But I have Sold Out, Make Way, From the Hungry i, and several other albums on vinyl. I love what I think of as the _original_ Kinston Trio sound. This performance seemed a little bit melodramatic to me. But then, I think the song is kind of a melodrama. ;-) I'm also a bit biased because I think the guys were great-looking back in 1960! But that was before I was born.... :)

What I find interesting is the fact that Bill Zorn calls the Guard era Trio recording the song something "we" did. I'm all for brotherhood...but he did nothing.

if you read shakespeare, there are characters named maria (love's labour lost, the twelfth night). the english pronounced "maria" mariah.

Yes!!! Except the English do not always pronounce it this way. My name is Maria and pronounced this way. I send people this song so they know how to pronounce it. I have a friend whose grandmother was Norwegian and spelled it "Maria", but pronounced it "Mar I a". The slang term for a police car in Britain is "Black Maria" pronounced like this. :)

+Kingston Trio The group suffers the signature sound of your voice. That guy Zorn doesn't pull it off. Haworth was much better. The vocal sound lacks the rough edge you brought to it, and Haworth had it much more than this guy, who should NEVER sing "Scotch and Soda". It's about the same as Englebert Humperdinck singing Muddy Waters songs.

I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE. Definitely the Kingston Trio "lite". No original performers and no sound even close to the originals. When they lost Dave Guard they improved immensely. When the lost John Stewart it was all over. John went on to make many records of his own. Nick Reynolds reunited with Bob Shane off and on, but the magic could never be regained. I loved the originals. I hate this group.

This guy's full of it, He has the audacity to claim they sang it 1st, but their version came years after Vaughan Monroe who was the ORIGINAL singer along with his orchestra, wjich walks all over this sleepy version. Monroe's version put the FEELING into the song, the lonliness, and yet had that intriguing "Indian" beat that was such a signature of the period in which the song was written. Credit should be given where credit is due.

The way the original KT (Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane) did this song was much much better than this - both the arrangement and the melody. I don't like the way this incarnation of the KT changed the melody -- on any of the verses. The original KT's minor key modulation on verse 2 was great. This version isn't.

'Wish the audio mix was better. Sounds like they used the live feed where they take all the tone out of the guitars so there's no feedback but later you'd dial it back in for a video mix. The Kingston Trio deserve better-than-amateur soundtracks.

I agree with Mike Bryant, I grew up listening to the REAL Kingston Trio from the first notes of Tom Dooley..........these are NOT the Kingston Trio, not a single member of this group was ever with the Kingston Trio. Dave Guard, John Stewart and Nick Reynolds have passed away, Bob Shane is still alive but he is not a member of this group.This is the worst set of imposters I have ever seen.

I believe that using their name and doing their songs must have been okayed by whom ever has the Copyrights. Probably Bob by now. I know that around 1977 I ran into Bob and his two other (unknown) performers were at the Troubadour in L.A. headlined as the Kingston Trio. These guys are just carrying on the legacy. Thats good.

This IS THE Kingston Trio, as it evolved under the leadership of founding member Bob Shane. Shane retired for health reasons in 2004, and this group carried on until they were forced to disband. Bob Shane sold some licensing rights to the name in 2017 to the son of another founding member, the late Nick Reynolds. Chaos soon erupted and Josh Reynolds (son of Nick) left the act and various other members were hired on to fill the gap. The current state of the Kingston Trio is that it has nothing to do with the metamorphosis of the first 60 years of the group.

wow- ive read some really dumb things on youtube and I think this is the worste comment yet. First off the song is beautiful. Second off the Smothers Brothers harmonies and music abilities are awesome. I would put all the money I have down saying that you prob, have horrible taste in music and that you are bad at playing it.
