Eccentricity
Mike Mineo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I do say that I don't believe
Your put on eccentricities
That drop the phonies to their knees

But I know what's real and what I see
Lack the need for imagery
Of what the self should truly be
Still you say your ups are down
The sky you walk with clouded ground
Shall crumble at the faintest sound

Then you turn to your crowd
As some remark you're so profound
The nagging thought drags others down
Is this deep or just eccentric

Now you pull upon the reigns
And whip the deer into the game
Of which they can't free their brain

From somewhere to the land of your's
With purple lined hardwood floors
And dreams that sprout from magic spores

Like Hamlet's act in Shakespeare's dream
Whose mind struggles with reality
But you, just want to be a mystery

Well I do say that I don't believe

Your put on eccentricities
That drop the phonies to their knees

Overall Meaning

In the song 'Eccentricity', Mike Mineo is expressing his skepticism towards people who put on a façade of being eccentric just for show. He knows what's genuine and what is not, and he doesn't need any fake imagery to prove it. He realizes that those who are truly eccentric don't have to try to be so; it's just who they are. The people who put on a show tend to attract a following who thinks that they are profound, but the question that nags at others is whether they are genuine or just eccentric for the sake of it.

The imagery in the song is vivid, with the sky being walked on as if it were clouded ground, and a crowd that hangs on the words of the eccentric person, without knowing whether they are authentic or not. The second half of the song talks about the deer being whipped into the game and being pulled somewhere else. The lyrics are reminiscent of Hamlet's act in Shakespeare's play, a person whose mind struggles with reality. However, unlike Hamlet, this person just wants to be a mystery, even if it means putting on a façade of eccentricity. Mike Mineo concludes by saying that he doesn't believe in put-on eccentricities that drop the phonies to their knees.
