With the way that you've been sneaking
Up behind me indiscreetly?
Tell me what have I done
To deserve this crazy treatment?
Got me havin' thoughts of leavin'
And I
But I
Refuse to pay the price for the ones that've hurt you
Ooh, baby
Oh release me, oh set me free
I don't want this kind of love
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Take it back, I've had enough
Oh release me, oh set me free
I don't want this kind of love
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Take it back, I've had enough
Tell me why be suspicious
Of the company I'm keeping?
So you're having trouble sleeping?
Isn't love built on trust?
That's the very thing we're missing
Honey baby, won't you listen?
And I
Am not the kind of girl that would up and desert you
And I
Refuse to pay the price for the ones that've hurt you
Oh release me, oh set me free
I don't want this kind of love
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Take it back, I've had enough
Oh release me, oh set me free
I don't want this kind of love
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Take it back, I've had enough
Baby, how you gon' treat me
Tippin' on me indiscreetly?
If you really don't need me
Baby, baby, set me free
So you're having trouble sleeping?
And I've been having thoughts of leaving
I don't deserve this crazy treatment
Baby, baby, release me
Why you wanna do me like this?
All your games and your tricks
I ain't with it
What's up with that?
Now you say you want to play
Well, it's got to be my way
You better get your gat out
'Cause the girl's from the hood yeah, I am that, oh
Oh release me, oh set me free
I don't want this kind of love
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Take it back, I've had enough
Oh release me, oh set me free (you gotta set me free)
I really don't want it, babe
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Take it back, I've had enough
Oh release me, oh set me free (set me free now)
I don't want it, uh, really can't use it, baby
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Take it back, I've had enough of you, ooh
Oh release me, oh set me free
Oh, release me, oh set me free
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me
Oh release me, oh set me free
I don't want this kind of love
If that's the way it has to be, if that's the love you have for me (if it's got to be)
I don't want it
The lyrics to Miki Howard's song "Release Me" deal with the singer expressing her frustration with a partner who is acting suspiciously towards her. She questions why he feels the need to sneak up behind her and be suspicious of the people she spends time with. She asserts that she is not the kind of person to just up and desert someone, but also refuses to pay the price for the past hurt someone else may have caused. The chorus emphasizes her desire to be released from this kind of love and set free from the burden of dealing with this type of treatment. She questions why her partner treats her this way and challenges him to set her free if he doesn't really need her.
The song speaks of the importance of honesty and trust in a relationship, and how these elements are essential for building a strong foundation. The singer does not want to be with someone who lacks these qualities and is not willing to put in the work to maintain a healthy and loving relationship. Through the song, she expresses her desire to be free from the toxic elements of this relationship, hoping that her partner will recognize his mistakes and make the necessary changes to keep their love alive.
