Round Midnight
Miles Jaye Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight
Memories always start 'round midnight
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind
Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad
Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight
"Round Midnight" is a song written by jazz pianist Thelonious Monk in 1944. The lyrics were added later by Bernie Hanighen. The song has been covered by a variety of artists and remains a jazz standard today. The Miles Jaye version of the song is a soulful rendition with emotive vocals and smooth saxophone solos.
The opening lines of the song set the scene for a melancholic mood that persists throughout the rest of the song. The singer is feeling alright until the evening comes around, at which point they begin to feel sad. The feeling worsens "round midnight" when memories start to flood back. The singer references a past quarrel with a lover, wondering if it means the end of their love. The chorus pleads for the lover's return and for the two to reconcile.
The song explores themes of heartbreak, nostalgia, and longing. The lyrics emphasize the pain of being separated from a loved one, while the music reinforces the lyrical content with moody chords and slow tempo. The repeated reference to "round midnight" creates a sense of cyclical melancholy, with the singer experiencing the same emotions every night.
