1) Mineral formed in 1994 and like other young bands, they toured constantly, virtually living in their van. The band's first release, the 7 inch "Gloria"/"Parking Lot" 7", was released on Audio Concept by Kerry McDonald from Christie Front Drive (the record was later re-released by Caulfield Records). Through a few rabid fans, that 7" found its way into the hands of crank! and Mineral later decided to release their records on the label.
Their first full length The Power of Failing, was recorded in 6 days in October 1995, followed by a split 7 inch with Jimmy Eat World and Sense Field shortly after when the three bands hit the road together. Since then, Mineral has released another 7 inch ("February"/"MD") on Caulfield and songs on various compilations.
Mineral released their second full length, EndSerenading in 1998 with Mark Trombino at Big Fish Studios in Encinitas, California.
Shortly after completing recording for "EndSerenading", the four members of Mineral decided to go their separate ways. Chris Simpson and Jeremy Gomez formed the Gloria Record. Gabriel Wiley and Scott McCarver were briefly in a band called Imbroco. Gabe is now in Pop Unknown. Scott was last spotted in Austin but as far as we know he doesn't have a steady rock gig these days.
The Gloria Record have split up and Chris Simpson is working on a solo project called Zookeeper.

Some gave out a long time ago
It's only performance and not dress rehearsal
The hipsters and trash trucks and I should know
But it's never now, no, it's always tomorrow, yeah
Or yesterday here
Some kind of shadow show
And November's dreams line the yard sales of May
It's always a reason they're trying to sell you
It's always a reasonable doubt
But things with no reason just pour forth each instant
From nothing and make such a joyous sound
Aurora, Aurora, a child, a babe
A blue yawning glow upon flowers of the alleyway
And lo, in the east now a pink dragon rises
Spills light o'er the buildings from her thousand-petalled crown
Makes one all the many, the changelings, reclaims each
Rains jewels down the mountains, lights every face in town
But it's never now, no, it's always tomorrow
Or yesterday here—some kind of shadow show
But things with no reason just pour forth each instant
From nothing and make such a joyous sound
Aurora, Aurora, a child, a babe
A blue yawning glow upon flowers of the alleyway
Can't get up for falling down
We're taped together now
Love in the lost and found
Everything resounds
Can't get up for falling down
We're taped together now
Love in the lost and found
Everything resounds
Can't get up for falling down
We're taped together now
Love in the lost and found
Everything resounds
Can't get up for falling down
We're taped together now
Love in the lost and found
The lyrics of Mineral's song "Aurora" paint a vivid picture of the complexities of life and the contrasting emotions that come with it. The opening lines, "It's always an answer that nobody questions, some gave out a long time ago," suggest that society often follows a predetermined path without questioning or challenging it. The mention of hipsters and trash trucks hints at the transient nature of trends and material possessions.
The song goes on to explore the notion of time, highlighting how the present moment is elusive. It's described as "never now, no, it's always tomorrow, yeah, or yesterday here—some kind of shadow show." This suggests that we often find ourselves living in the past or constantly looking towards the future, missing out on the beauty and joy of the present moment.
The verses also touch upon the juxtaposition of destruction and renewal. The imagery of "dump fires in the west now, the city's aflame" suggests chaos and turmoil. However, the following lines explain that even in the midst of destruction, there is a sense of rebirth and renewal through the line, "November's dreams line the yard sales of May." This juxtaposition reflects the duality of life, where beauty and growth can emerge from the most challenging circumstances.
The chorus introduces the character of Aurora, symbolizing hope and purity. Aurora's presence brings light, joy, and transformation to the world. The repetition of her name emphasizes her significance and the positive impact she has on the people around her.
The final section explores the theme of resilience and love. The repetition of "Can't get up for falling down" acknowledges the struggles and setbacks in life. However, the phrase "We're taped together now, love in the lost and found" highlights the power of love and connection to mend and heal. The line "everything resounds" suggests that despite the hardships, life continues to echo with a deep and profound meaning.
Overall, "Aurora" presents a contemplative reflection on the complexities of existence, the fleeting nature of time, the capacity for renewal amidst destruction, and the healing power of love.
