Joy
Minutemen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

money survival out of necessity
man made boundries
to conquer and conquer
a meal
the family
gawking
nubiles
in the nest
feeding them makes us happy

that's pure joy
and closest to conquering the inevitable

Overall Meaning

The Minutemen's song "Joy" is a commentary on the human experience of seeking pleasure and happiness despite the harsh realities of survival and mortality. The lyrics assert that our pursuit of joy comes from a place of necessity, as we are driven to seek out pleasure and fulfillment in order to survive and overcome the boundaries imposed upon us by society and the natural world. The singer observes the familial joy of providing for one's loved ones, as contrasted with the gawking and immature behavior of those who have not yet embraced the responsibilities of adulthood. Ultimately, the song concludes that the purest form of joy comes from overcoming the inevitability of death and finding a sense of triumph in the face of mortality.

The overall message of "Joy" is one of acceptance and appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, while acknowledging the harsh realities that we all face as living beings. The Minutemen convey these themes through their distinctly punk-influenced sound, combining fast-paced guitar riffs and driving drums with poetic lyrics that address larger sociopolitical issues. Ultimately, the powerful combination of sound and message makes "Joy" a standout track in the band's oeuvre, with enduring relevance in the modern day.

My band got to open for them on their last tour. Chicago, The West End, 1985. The owner of the club lost his mind and took a baseball bat and batted glasses, bottles, and the venues crystal chandeleir. Paul Mahern finally put an end to the chaos and tackled him. Up until that point no one knew if the Minute Men would still go on. We'd already played our set...maybe we were so bad the owner couldn't take it anymore? Ha!

What a great fucking band.

Cheers from a US expat on Tralfamadore!
