Pure
Mirah and Ginger Takahashi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hypnotize, hypnotize, hypnotize
Laugh till we cry
Hypnotize, hypnotize, hypnotize
Laugh till we cry

Safely dodging lover's lasso
Give in, give in, give in
Matter how they try and pass you
Give in, give in, give in
Matter how you try and figure
Give in, give in, give in
Everyday it just gets bigger
Give in, give in, give in

Give in, give in, give in, give in
Give in, give in, give in, give in
Give in, give in, give in, give in
Give in, give in, give in

Invisible star sing me to sleep
Telling secrets, sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
Invisible star sing me to sleep
Telling secrets, sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep

And i've stopped drinking
And smoking
And eating
And breathing
So i should be pure, i know
I should be pure
Pure

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mirah and Ginger Takahashi's song "Pure" convey a sense of being entranced or hypnotized by something or someone. The repetition of the phrase "Hypnotize, hypnotize, hypnotize" suggests a state of being captivated and unable to resist. The subsequent line "Laugh till we cry" further emphasizes the intensity of this experience. It could refer to a situation where the singer finds something so amusing or joyful that it brings them to tears.

The following verses delve into the theme of surrendering or giving in. The lines "Safely dodging lover's lasso" and "Matter how they try and pass you" allude to the idea of avoiding attempts to control or manipulate, while ultimately giving in to a force or power. This could be interpreted as a surrender to love or passion, acknowledging that resistance is futile.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Give in" multiple times, emphasizing the idea of yielding or surrendering. The repetition reinforces the sense of being overwhelmed by something bigger or greater than oneself, as the lyrics indicate that every day it just gets bigger. This could imply that the allure or power of the situation intensifies with time.

The second half of the song takes a different direction, shifting to the theme of purity. The lines "And I've stopped drinking, and smoking, and eating, and breathing" suggest a renunciation of physical pleasures and indulgences in an attempt to attain purity. However, the repetition of the word "pure" at the end of the song raises a question mark, hinting at the contrast between the desire for purity and the reality of human experiences and desires.

Overall, "Pure" explores the themes of fascination, surrender, and the pursuit of purity in a thought-provoking and enigmatic manner.

Hypnotic and enchanting. It'll always remind me of the hiking/camping trips I made with my ex-wife. It feels like a world away now. Beautiful song.

This song is actually by Mirah's younger sister... I think her name is Emily. I saw Mirah perform at Barnard College years ago, and her sister was the warm-up and sang this song. It was beautiful :)
