Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

That's What Makes the Jukebox Play
Miranda Lambert Lyrics

On the rocks at the end of the bar
For the Carolines sipping their wine
Hoping this is where the good ones are
For the lovers making out in a corner booth
For the one over there, don't think I didn't notice you
That's what makes the jukebox play
There's a song you can lean on
That's what makes the jukebox play
When the night won't end
'Cause it plays over and over and over again
For the belt buckle shiner
She's starting all the fires in her Levi jeans
For the one who doesn't come here anymore
'Cause he's getting over me
For the one stirring up her emotions
In the ice with her fingertips
She showed up with somebody
But that ain't who she's leaving with
That's what makes the jukebox play
When you live like neon
There's a song you can lean on
That's what makes the jukebox play
When the night won't end
'Cause it plays over and over and over again
For my old dive bar with the hand drawn heart
Hanging lonely on the bathroom door
For the old dance hall with the mirror ball
Throwing starlight on the floor
That's what makes the jukebox play
When you live like neon
There's a song you can lean on
That's what makes the jukebox play
When the night won't end
'Cause it plays over and over and over again (ooh)
It plays over and over and over
(Oh, oh yeah, ooh)
The song "That's What Makes the Jukebox Play" by Miranda Lambert speaks about the power of music to bring people together in a dive bar. The lyrics describe different characters that come to the bar and the reasons why they are there. Some drink in anger, while others come hoping to find love. There are also those who use the jukebox as a means to escape from reality, at least for a few moments. Lambert sings about the things that make the bar what it is, such as the belt buckle shiner who's always starting fires, the old dance hall with the mirror ball, and the hand-drawn heart on the bathroom door.
Overall, the song is about the experiences and emotions that people bring to a bar, and how music can bring everyone together. The line "when you live like neon" suggests that people who frequent dive bars are often living their lives in bright and colorful ways, and the music in the background is what completes the picture. Despite what brings them to the bar, the jukebox and the music it plays is the one constant that everyone can enjoy.
In conclusion, "That's What Makes the Jukebox Play" is a song about the universal experience of going to a dive bar and the power of music to unite people from all walks of life.
