Hey Mister!
Miss May I Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.
I gave it all but you were never there,
I gave it all but did you ever really care?
I hope where you are is a home for you,
because I never found mine while I was always looking for you.

Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.

Hey, live it up!

Where are you this time?
You never showed, you'll never know,
How could you just let me go?
I'm all alone but you can't feel that,
Look at me now, now I've become,
become the man you'll never know.

This is the anthem for all you cowards.
This is the anthem for all you cowards.
Cowards!

Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.
I just don't see it eye to eye anymore,
You were too much for me to ignore.
This search has been full of so many tears,
That flooded the future I saw discovering you.

Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.

Hey, live it up!

Where are you this time?
You never showed, you'll never know,
How could you just let me go?
I'm all alone but you can't feel that,
Look at me now, now I've become,
become the man you'll never know.

This is what I got,
I don't need you anymore.
This is what I got,
I don't need you anymore.
This is what I got,
I don't need you anymore.

This is what I got,
I don't need you.

Overall Meaning

The song "Hey Mister!" by Miss May I is about the search for a father figure who was absent from the singer's life. The repeated phrase "Hey Mister, where have you been?" serves as a questioning plea toward the father, expressing the pain and disappointment of growing up without a father figure. The repeated chorus of "I gave it all but you were never there" highlights the deep desire for a presence that was never fulfilled. The singer goes on to say that he hopes wherever the father is, he has found a home, but also reveals that he himself never found a home while searching for his father.

The bridge of the song then takes a turn towards anger, calling out all the "cowards" who have abandoned their children. The final verse is a declaration of independence, stating that the singer has become the man his father never knew, implying that he no longer needs the absent father in his life. The repetition of "This is what I got, I don't need you anymore" is a cathartic release, marking the end of the search and the beginning of a new journey.

Overall, "Hey Mister!" is a heartfelt and emotional song that speaks to anyone who has experienced the pain of growing up without a father or any form of guidance. It also serves as a reminder for all parents and parental figures to be present in their children's lives and to not abandon them.

Miss may I, was my band that inspired me to be a better father. I fought as hard as I could and have full custody of both of my boys. For 8 years I have been doing this on my own. Two years ago I met an incredible woman who was ready to stand by me. Never give up, life gets better. We are always worth it.

Have you not heard the song. You know why we are here. Badass intro and lyrics about dead beat dads sounds like an anthem to me.
