Big Hurt
Miss Toni Fisher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now it begins, now that you've gone
Needles and pins, twilight till dawn
Watching that clock till you return
Lighting that torch and watching it burn
Now it begins, day after day
This is my night, ticking away
Waiting to hear footsteps that say
"Love will appear and this time to stay"
Oh, each time you go
I try to pretend
It's over at last
This time the big hurt will end
Now it begins, now that you've gone
Needles and pins, twilight till dawn
But if you go, come back again
I wonder when, oh when will it end?
The big hurt

The big hurt
The big hurt

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Miss Toni Fisher's song "Big Hurt" describe the pain and heartbreak one experiences when a lover leaves. The song begins with the singer acknowledging the beginning of a long night without their lover, with the imagery of needles and pins used to symbolize the physical and emotional pain they are feeling. As they wait for their lover's return, they watch as the torch they light burns down to nothing. The torch can be interpreted as a metaphor for the hope that their lover will return and their love will rekindle, but as the torch burns out, so does the singer's hope.

The chorus repeats the phrase "now it begins" to emphasize the cyclical nature of heartbreak. The singer is stuck in a constant loop of waiting for their lover to return, only to be disappointed when they don't. They know deep down that their love is not guaranteed to last, and that each time their lover leaves, it could be the end. The final lines of the song express the singer's desperation for the heartbreak to end, but also their fear that it never will.

Overall, the lyrics of "Big Hurt" capture the raw emotions of heartbreak and the longing for a love that may never return.

Her last recordings were made for Capitol in 1967. She spent the rest of the sixties doing club dates and retired from the music scene after the death of her husband in 1970. Toni Fisher died of a heart attack February 12, 1999 at the age of 67 in Hyrum, Utah - it's a shame she didn't get more recognition than she did for such innovative technique with song which heralded musical influence well into the 1960's music revolution.

I remember the first time I heard this song . I was instantly captured! I was in the general store in Lake Los Angeles with my cousin. I asked who that was, playing over the speakers! I loved it. The lady running the store was so kind! She burned it onto a CD for me! 😍
