I'm Satisfied
Mississippi John Hurt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm satisfied, tickled too, old enough to marry you
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back
I'm satisfied, tickled too, old enough to marry you
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back

First in the country, then in the town,
I'm a total shaker from my navel on down
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back
I'm satisfied, tickled too, old enough to marry you
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back

I pull my dress to my knees, I give my total all to who I please
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back
I'm satisfied, tickled too, old enough to marry you
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back

I'm satisfied, tickled too, old enough to marry you
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back

I'm satisfied, tickled too, old enough to marry you
I'm satisfied it's gonna bring you back

Overall Meaning

Mississippi John Hurt's song "I'm Satisfied" is a joyful expression of his love for someone. The first stanza, "I'm satisfied, tickled too, old enough to marry you," shows his contentment and happiness with his relationship. He is confident that his satisfaction will bring back the person he loves. The second stanza, "First in the country, then in the town, I'm a total shaker from my navel on down," portrays his pride in his social status and his ability to dance. He acknowledges that he might not have the riches and the sophistication of the urban folks, but he still finds joy in his simple pleasures. The third and final stanza, "I pull my dress to my knees, I give my total all to who I please," shows his willingness to offer himself completely to his partner. He is eager to please and ready to commit.

The song is a testament to the enduring nature of Mississippi John Hurt's music. Despite the challenges of the time, Hurt continued to make music and tour throughout his life. The song is also a reminder of the cultural and social context in which it was created. The rural blues, like this song, were borne out of the African-American experience, characterized by poverty, oppression, and discrimination. Yet, through their music, they found an outlet for their struggles and a means to express their joys and hopes. Finally, the song is a celebration of love, a common theme in blues music that acknowledges the pain of heartbreak but also recognizes the power of human connection.

ewww what a fanboy

tidewaterblues

John's thumping thumb bass is hypnotic. You can pick John's style from a mile away. Others try to imitate and fail. There's only one Mississippi John.

john Morrison

tidewaterblues completely agree with you he is unique

hard mode

uh and whats so specific about his style?if you dont mind the question

Orville Gibson

@hard mode John was Travis picking before Merle was born. John was possibly the first steady thumb bass style players in the world, but he blended the melody lines into the thumb picking pattern and also harmonised the entire arrangement. No musical training. Very few guitarists can approach his skill level. He has a unique sound that is easy to pick from other players.

@Orville Gibson again with the "He has a unique sound that is easy to pick from other players." smh... its just so annoying

Thank you thank you! Few months back there was barely a MJH video on YouTube (literally one short clip). This one is one of the best quality videos I've seen today and, of course, MJH is just a fantastic performer. Thank you again!

You've heard about people who you never hear anything bad about? That's Miss. John Hurt. Everything I've ever heard about him is that he was a sweet, gentle soul and his music reflects that. Wonderful man!
