What Now My Love
Mitch Ryder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What now, my love, now that you've left me
How can I live through another day
Watching my dreams turning to ashes
And my hopes into bits of clay

Once I could see, once I could feel
Now I am numb, I've become unreal
I walk the night without a goal
Stripped of my heart, my soul

What now, my love, now that it's over
I feel the world closing in on me
Here come the stars tumbling around me
There's the sky where the sea should be

What now, my love, now that you've gone
I'd be a fool to go on and on
No one would care, no one would cry
If I should live or die

What now, my love, now there is nothing
Only my last goodbye

Overall Meaning

Mitch Ryder’s song What Now My Love depicts the devastation and despair that comes after a significant relationship has ended. The lyrics convey a feeling of complete hopelessness and confusion, asking the question of where to go next when everything that mattered has disappeared. The singer is left with nothing but shattered dreams and crumbled hopes. He once had vision and purpose but now he is empty, not allowing himself to feel anything. The singer wanders aimlessly in the darkness, lost and without direction, having lost his heart and soul in the relationship.

The second verse suggests that the outside world has lost its meaning for the singer now that his love is gone. The stars that once brought him wonder are tumbling around him, and the sky has replaced the sea, symbolizing the disorderly mess his life has become. The last verse describes the point where the singer has reached rock bottom, having nothing left to offer or look forward to, besides his last goodbye.

In summary, the song is a poignant representation of the devastation and sense of loss suffered after the end of a significant relationship. Ryder’s powerful and expressive voice conveys a raw sense of pain that can be felt by anyone who has experienced heartbreak.

What a beautiful reading of a great song. His somewhat low monotone reading of the song gives it such a haunting feel and so well done.

@debraweaver6308

It sure does! Up until almost a year ago... I NEVER KNEW that Mitch could sing ballads! I mean... I always liked his voice, but I only remember him as doing rock. I was thoroughly BLOWN AWAY!!!

@john6172

Always loved this song !

@lyndadickerson5200

Love his high note.

@djpuzz

Holy crap! That high note at the end blew out the tape.

@debraweaver6308

Yeah!!!

@debraweaver6308

No one could hit those notes like Mitch!

@rnr5682

I think he really gets into this song. All those who say he looks uncomfortable. Well, it’s a tremendously sad song. Yes, that canned track in a live setting doesn’t work, but really embodies the spirit of this song.

@pleinairpainting

this song got chopped badly, the end is the best part and he holds the note like forever... always loved that album.

@mustlovepretzels

Didn't expect this from Mitch. Different side of him musically. Oh well. Cheers!
