Tom never got better at his job. He just got his first 2 positions (cruises, ATN) through nepotism and then just kept being a sycophant to whoever had the biggest stick. If you look at how "hard" he worked on Election eve the hardest he worked was when the touchscreen went down and he just shouted at people to fix it without contributing any technical or moral support.

What's so hard to get about this is that they could easily have explained away the "Mo" nickname. His name was Lester Mclintock. Mclintock starts with an M, Mo starts with an M. Tom and the others could have just said that Mo was a shortening of Mclintock. And the reason why he was never called it to his face was because corporate culture dictates that employees should always be formal when speaking to their superiors.
