Moby found commercial and critical success with his fifth album Play (1999), which, after receiving little recognition, became an unexpected global hit in 2000 after each track was licensed to films, television shows, and commercials. It remains his highest selling album with 12 million copies sold. Its seventh single, "South Side", featuring Gwen Stefani, remains his only one to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 14. Moby followed Play with albums of varied styles including electronic, dance, rock, and downtempo music, starting with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later albums saw him explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. (2016). Moby continues to record and release albums; his twenty-first studio album, Resound NYC, was released in May 2023.
In addition to his music career, Moby is known for his veganism and support for animal rights and humanitarian aid. He was the owner of TeaNY, a vegan cafe in Manhattan, and Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He is the author of four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs: Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).

Come on girl
Come on baby
Come on girl
I love you baby
I love you now
I love you baby
Look at us, were beautiful
All the people push and pull
But let's just go out and ride
Talk about the things we try
Look at us, were beautiful
All the people push and pull but
They'll never get inside
We've got too much to hide
Come on baby
Come on girl
Come on baby
Come on girl
I love you baby
I love you now
I love you baby
I love you now
Look at us, we're beautiful
All the people push and pull but
Let's just go out and ride
Talk about the things we try
Look at us, we're beautiful
All the people push and pull but
They'll never get inside
We've got too much to hide
Look at us, we're beautiful
All the people push and pull but
Let's just go out and ride
Talk about the things we try
Look at us, we're beautiful
All the people push and pull but
They'll never get inside
We've got too much to hide
Look at us we're beautiful [Repeat x16]
The lyrics of Moby’s “Beautiful” celebrate love and beauty, suggesting that regardless of the chaos and judgment from others around us, love will always save us. The opening lines of the song – “come on baby, come on girl” – seem to coax the listener toward the central message of the song: love brings out the beauty within us.
As the song progresses, Moby’s lyrics become more descriptive. In the chorus, he sings “look at us, we’re beautiful / all the people push and pull / but let's just go out and ride / talk about the things we try.” This suggests that despite the chaos and judgment surrounding us, we should look past it and focus on love. The phrase “all the people push and pull” seems to refer to the societal pressure and the influence of others, but the central message is "love yourself and each other".
The second chorus repeats the idea of hiding: “look at us, we’re beautiful / all the people push and pull but / they'll never get inside / we've got too much to hide.” Here, the suggestion is that we are so beautiful because we are not ashamed to be ourselves and our true character is hidden from others. The final chorus repeats the phrase “look at us we’re beautiful” sixteen times, driving home the message that beauty lies not in physical appearance but in one's true self.
Overall, Moby’s “Beautiful” encourages the audience to love and live in their true selves, despite the pressure of society's expectations. The song celebrates individuality and suggests that true beauty comes from being true to oneself, and not seeking approval from others.
