Let's Do It
Molly Johnson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

In Spain, the best upper sets do it
Lithuanians and Latts do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love
The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it
Not to mention the Fins
Folks in Siam do it - think of Siamese twins

Some Argentines, without means, do it
People say in Boston even beans do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Romantic sponges they say, do it
Oysters down in oyster bay do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Cold Cape Cod clams, 'gainst their wish, do it
Even lazy jellyfish, do it
Well let's do it, let's fall in love

Electric eels I might add do it
Though it shocks 'em I know
Why ask if shad do it - Waiter bring me
"shad roe"

In shallow shoals, English soles do it
Goldfish in the privacy of bowls do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Electric eels I might add do it
Though it shocks 'em I know
Why ask if shad do it - Waiter de
"shad roe"

In shallow shoals, English soles do it

Goldfish in the privacy of bowls do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Molly Johnson's song Let's Do It elegantly express the fact that love-making is a natural phenomenon that occurs throughout the animal and human kingdoms. The opening verse indicates that even the smallest or most seemingly unlikely creatures, like birds, bees, and fleas, are part of this universal experience. This commonality in love-making is emphasized in the second verse as the singer cites numerous countries and cultures where people engage in romantic pursuits, whether they are wealthy or not, and whether it's in Amsterdam or Siam.

The third verse continues with a playful and whimsical list of animals that "do it," including oysters, jellyfish, and eels, while also referencing the sometimes risqué slang used to describe sexual activity (like "shad roe"). The final verse returns to the human realm with the suggestion that all sorts of people and fish, from English soles to goldfish in bowls, participate in the act of love-making. This song is not only upbeat and fun, but it also celebrates the universality of love-making and highlights how all living beings, big or small, engage in this act in some way.

Overall, the lyrics of Let's Do It encourage listeners to embrace their natural sexual urges and to join the rest of the world in the joy of intimacy. With a catchy tune that is easy to dance to, this song has become a beloved classic that continues to celebrate the power of physical love.

In Brazilian Portuguese, "Bossa Nova" means "New Way" (of doing things). Back in the late 50's, in the Brazilian musical scenario, it meant a new way of playing samba. Rithmically speaking, bossa nova has the same structure of samba, but it is played much lighter way. When it comes to the harmony, it is known as a very sophisticated musical style, with some room for improvisation, but not as much as in jazz.
