Momma's debut album, Interloper, and recent Apollo 7" showcase the duo's dynamic song structure and gripping lyrics. For their second full-length album, Two of Me, Friedman and Weingarten crafted an ambitious concept album called "The Bug House," a fictional world where tragic heroes experience poetic justice in carnivalesque settings. The album deals with themes of morality, youth, and punishment, exploring the darker side of the self.
The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer/engineer Aron Kobayashi Ritch, who helped the duo experiment with deeper and more distorted sounds. Drummer Zach Capitti Fenton and bass player Sebastian Jones made up the rhythm section for most of the album's tracks. The album's opener, "Bug House," sets the stage for the record with its expressive guitar tones and brooding mood. The album's more abrasive moments, like "Derby," are balanced by melodic ballads like "Double Dare."
Friedman and Weingarten each take a solo spotlight on their respective performances of "Ready Runner" and "Not a Runner," which feature tender instrumentation and introspective lyrics. The album's climactic closer, "Habitat," takes in the complex beauty of life and landscape before releasing a final deafening exhale.
Despite their many similarities, Friedman and Weingarten's creative compatibility on Two of Me is fueled by their appreciation for each other's differences. Their personal tastes and intuitions are valued and explored by one another equally, allowing them to create a record that feels both familiar and intriguing. Like a yin and yang symbol, they understand that nothing is made up solely of light or darkness, and confronting each part of oneself is the first step to seeing the whole picture.
Apollo
Momma Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
used to be a crony had to watch my mouth
i sleep with your god nightly
but you don't see
apollo's right next to me
i'm the broncho of this house
you'll pray to your god nightly
and then you'll see
apollo's right next to me
In the song Momma's Apollo, the singer portrays a character who was once a follower or minion but has now become the leader or puppet master of their own town. The person may have gone through struggles or challenges, as suggested by the line "used to be a crony had to watch my mouth," but has come out on top. The lyric "I sleep with your god nightly" is open to different interpretations, but it could mean that the person has embraced a higher power or belief system that others may not understand or accept.
Despite their success and confidence, the person in the song still feels unseen or misunderstood by others. Perhaps this is why they mention Apollo, who in Greek mythology was the god of music, prophecy, and other arts, but also had a reputation for being elusive or distant. By saying "you don't see / Apollo's right next to me," the singer could be implying that they have a special connection to a creative force or muse that gives them power or inspiration. This could also be a way of saying that the person has an inner strength or talent that is often overlooked or underestimated.
The second verse of the song reinforces the theme of strength and resilience, as the singer proclaims that they are now the "broncho" (a type of wild horse) of their house, and that they no longer get crushed by life's challenges but instead crush bugs. The line "you'll pray to your god nightly / and then you'll see / Apollo's right next to me" could be interpreted as a challenge or boast directed at those who may doubt the person's abilities or beliefs. The person is saying that even if others are praying to their own personal gods, they will still be no match for the power that the person feels within themselves.

WHY IS THIS BAND NOT MORE POPULAR
@csmitharris1460
They would have been big in the 90s, sadly the majority of the population doesn’t care about good, actual real music (ya know, with instruments) anymore.
@geoffreycharlton1017
love the song and that last lick is killer, wish they jammed that out longer, could easily get lost in that for awhile 🙂
@mahatmarandy5977
You guys have a nice 1994 thing going on. Reminds me of the Deal sisters. Makes me feel like I'm hearing an old song for the first time. But of course it's a new song and that makes me feel old. Which, of course, I am.
Anyway: I really like your music. Please keep making it.
