Early years
Brumby was born in 1974 in Devonport, Tasmania, and moved to Hobart at age seven.[12] She attended three different primary schools including Lauderdale Primary School (in nearby Clarence) and then secondary school at St Michael's Collegiate School to Year 12, she sang in stage musicals and tried out for women's soccer. In 1991, she was selected for the Australian under-19 youth team in a three test series against New Zealand.[13][14] While still at school, Brumby busked by singing to acoustic guitar in Hobart streets and obtained some part-time gigs.[12][15] In 1993, after leaving school, Brumby had paying gigs in Hobart clubs and then travelled to England on a working holiday as a boarding house mistress for a year;[15] she returned to Tasmania to write songs and, in 1995, relocated to Melbourne, Victoria, where she performed in local pubs and clubs. She joined a guitar-based band and wrote songs with its members before leaving to concentrate on her own songs.[15] In September 1995 she was the support act for Jeff Buckley's performance at The Athenaeum in Melbourne and at the Phoenician Club in Sydney.[16]

Valerie you know me
While they’re out there foolin’ around
She’s at home writing it all down
She understands the values of man
Valerie’s got a master plan
You and I we’ve got the best of everything
While they’re out there foolin’ around
She’s at home writin’ this shit down
She understands the nuances of man
Valerie’s got a master plan
While we’re all waiting for love to come back
She’s in the back room ready to attack
You know she can, she can
Valerie’s got a master plan
While they’re out there foolin’ around
She’s at home writing it all down
She understands the value of her hands
Valerie’s got a master plan
While we’re all waiting for love to come back
She’s in the back room ready to attack
While we’re all waiting for love to come back
She’s in the back room ready to attack
You know she can, she can
Valerie’s got a master plan
In Monique Brumby’s song Valerie, the lyrics revolve around a woman named Valerie who is a mastermind and has it all figured out. The singer contrasts themselves and Valerie with “they” who are “foolin’ around” while Valerie is “writing it all down.” This suggests that “they” are not as focused and determined as Valerie. The singer admires how Valerie understands “the values of man” and “the nuances of man”. The repeated line “Valerie’s got a master plan” strongly suggests that Valerie is in control and knows what she is doing. The chorus indicates that while everyone else is waiting for love to return, Valerie is ready to seize the moment and take action.
This song can be interpreted to show the admiration towards the powerful and focused woman Valerie. The lyrics suggest a strong sense of respect and admiration towards Valerie for her ability to understand men and to have a plan. The chorus repeatedly chanting “Valerie’s got a master plan” shows the emphasis on the power and control that Valerie has. It also shows how the singer is grateful for Valerie’s presence in their life.
