Pannonica
Monk T Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Softer than silk and as warm as warm milk
Light as air and able to fly
Lost songs no bliss while they're waiting for her kiss
Pannonica my butterfly.

Fluttering one fair and bright as the sun
Light as wind embrassing the sky
Colorful wings soft and gaily painted things
Pannonica my butterfly.

Like the lovely flowers i'll wait for hours
Just to fell that touch the touch i love so much
One day she'll flutter by and i'll hold out my hand
cnd capture my butterfly.

Deliicate things such as butterfly wings
Poets can't describle though they try

Love played the tune while she steps from her cacoon
Pannonica my lovely, lovely little butterfly.

learning to play this song has really made me appreciate Monk's genius. None of the usual Jazz cliches and structures are present, but it is still totally consistent somehow. His style is so unique. I wish I could see the keyboard through his eyes.

@MrTubular13

monk "saw" he keyboard with his ears

hedgeclipper418 Chinese landscape painters have a very high regard for naivete, that one's own unique unlearned originality is to be carefully protected & that once lost it may never be found again. Although Monk was technically a very good pianist, whenever I listen to him I feel like a child again & I believe this is from that spirit of play or naivete - in a profound genius sense of the word. I would've loved Monk had I heard him as a child.

I learned to play it in a community college ensemble in Oakland, California about 6 years ago, too, and definitely had the same experience of appreciating Monk tremendously more from it. I learned it on clarinet, and later on keyboard. It remains one of my favorite songs.
