In my lifetime I've seen Meinl really be the company that's endorsing all of the up-and-comers (especially in the metal world) and it's nice to see them pick you up as well. I don't own any of their cymbals but this is definitely a nice endorsement to see!

I love Meinl cymbals, I remember seeing an ad for them in the 80's in a copy of Modern Drummer, but no one had them in any music store so I didn't get to hear them until the invention of this thing called the internet. I can`t choose only one company. I have a fav cymbal from mostly all of them, a Paiste ride and hat , a Meinl stack, crash and splash , a Sabian crash and a Wuhan china. Companies should accept endorsements in this format.

Much well overdue and deserved. The reality is the companies are looking for content creators / influencers (in this new model of endorsement agreements) and not necessarily the players slugging it out on psychical tours anymore unless the band is iconic. (That’s the old model) A lot more eyes see the multi camera high def sound drum video content posted by viewing from the palm of a hand holding a smart phone. Your playing, content, realistic angle and witty perspective that you are so great at conveying is well done, fun and educational. Keep up the great work and hopefully the drum stick, drum company,drum head and pedal/hardware deals will follow! Cheers!

I just found this channel and my first impression was - man, that style is similar to Zack :D Just to hear in this video, that you really are inspired by that Zack. It's funny when I realize that couple of months ago I started following Zack when he had like 20K subscribers and was kind of unknown. Seeing that Zack is a widely popular drummer today and that another drummer inspired by him just signed a deal with Menil is kinda awesome. I am happy for them.

Hi Nate, I watch your videos here in Brazil and I really enjoy and learn a lot from them. Many years ago I had an "endorsement" deal with Zildjian. As you mentioned, it was not much more than letting me play a couple cymbals that did not belong to me (in addition to the ones I bought with my own money already), a t-shirt and a stick bag. I played them, sent back broken ones, and when I wasn't playing at the level I was before, they asked for them back. And that was that.

I use a mix of cymbal brands and agree with you that all the reputable cymbal manufacturers make great cymbals, UFIP make a bunch of my favourites which are vintage but their recent ranges have some even better sounds imo e.g the Class and Rough series make ....smooth sounding cymbals. It's all subjective and personal taste anyway.

Congratulations on your Meinl endorsement! I think you should play what you love. Meinl makes some great cymbals & I have respect for their company. I use a lot of Meinl percussion instruments, that's how I know a bit about the company. You're not a "sell out", you've just taken your career in music up a few notches & good for you! Meinl really is a great company, I bought a Meinl percussion kit last year with a cowbell, shakers, ching ring, etc. It also came with a zip-up hoodie, which was sadly forgotten about after getting in touch with me about my size. One thing to note about sponsorships: You don't necessarily need to be the most technical or fastest player to be sponsored. You just need to have some exposure. At 100k subs, that's great in my opinion! Hell, you've got a bit more than 5k views each day with this video so far! When you think about it, that's a lot of people! Having only 100 views on my videos is almost a miracle haha!

Hey Nate! Congrats on the endorsement deal. 🎉 and this vid is spot on. My 2cents… I have a few endorsement deals that I signed years ago… and in hindsight I wish I had not have taken them. To be honest, those companies sent me contracts, with the promise of discounts and then completely ignored me for years. Lol …they’ve barely sent me anything and the discounts amounted to a good sale at guitar center. In the meantime, I’ve been selling their gear and brand to all of my followers and students. It’s definitely not a fair exchange of value.

Recently, I did get approached by a big cymbal company, I won’t say who… But I also already endorse the drum stick company that they own. After dancing around sending me a contract for over years, they finally sent it… and guess what… it was the standard “discount deal” …basically a coupon in exchange for access to my audience. However, the difference now is I have about a quarter of a million followers across all of my social platforms. And these drummers know me, and trust me. If I tell them to buy a specific brand… they will.

So needless to say, I turned the company down and they were not happy. In an email exchange, words like “ungrateful” and phrases like “you should be thankful that we are even talking to you” were thrown out.Lol …but at the end of the day, it’s just like you said. I’d rather have the freedom to choose what cymbals I want to play. Luckily, these days I can afford my cymbals but that’s not the point. An endorsement deal should be a partnership. If the company refuses to make any invest or take any risk with you, then that company isn’t looking for a partnership and they don’t really believe in you as an artist… and you should move on. But it sounds like you found a solid partner in Meinl. So no need to explain yourself. Great job and well deserved! You are a top notch educator, player & asset to the drumming community. Keep doing your thing!

Solid video. I do have a question — as someone relatively new to drumming… most drum videos on YouTube, you see mics pointed directly at each drum and cymbal. You appear to be using more of a single mic picking up the sound in the room, is that correct? I’d love to know your reasoning, and the pros/cons of recording each way.

Good honest video that discusses the true nature of drum endorsement deals. On YouTube channels that are not about music endorsements are means of income and so are strictly business relationships that can come across as shilling the subscriber base. However, drum channel and drum and cymbal manufacturer relationships have a very different co operation that is benificial even for the non participating average subscriber to such endorsed drum channels. Firstly, I think it's awesome that drum companies endorse certain artists despite and in spite of a market that is not swayed by drummer names but is swayed by drum and cymbal sound. Vinnie coliauta for example never made me want to buy a custom zildjians but his old VHS tape sampling the range did influence my purchase of a select few cymbals that I liked the sound of from that tape. Secondly, the endorsement helps keep great drum channels and great drum philosophers like this guy alive(I don't mean breathing haha, just I mean a real support line to keep this guy sharing his wisdom with us at no cost to us) which we ought be paying for but have the luxury of not(though pay for for live performances and personalised lessons of course, that should never be free).lastly, we the viewers benefit. The support he has for his channel and musical career allowing him to share knowledge and lessons with us via YouTube is one thing. Like my example about the Vinnie coliauta VHS tape of old exposing me to new sound and colour options that I hadn't exposed myself to prior thus giving me renewed inspiration and even new sonic template ideas to consider when making future purchases.
The drum endorsement model is ideal for all parties. The company get to sound their products via a channel. The artist gets security from the support of that brand and, especially in this case, get to directly associate with a company they really love. We , the subscribers, aren't feeling there is any selling out or corporate take over happening as the drum community, which all drum manufacturers know, mix and match regardless of what drummers we are fans of. Heck, I've drum friends that are endorsed yet use and have other branded stuff in their private collection. The endorsement deal has all the integrity in tact for all parties and it's unique especially to drummers, I mean for example guitarists will use pick ups that are coupled with the guitar manufacturers body build with only the strings maybe being off brand or outside of manufacturers agreements. Drummers can choose heads, cymbals, drums, hardware, sticks and mics all independently. Congrats on the endorsement, thanks for the insight. I've friends with endorsements but I don't. Don't yet deserve one. But if I could I have my own preferences in mind. That won't mean not buying something I like from this video and set for private use. The drum community is special like this. There's business and then there is interests. Nice to see both worlds hand in hand organically like shown here in this video
