Foolish Love
Monophonics Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was five and he was six
We rode on horses made of sticks
He wore black and I wore white
He would always win the fight

Bang bang, she shot you down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down.

Seasons came and changed the time
When I grew up, I called him mine
He would always laugh and say
Remember when we used to play?

Bang bang, she shot you down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down.

Oh my baby
She shot me down

Now she's gone, I don't know why
I didn't even say goodbye
Oh sometimes I see him crying
didn't have the time to lie.

Bang bang, she shot you down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down

Oh She shot me down
Bang Bang
Oh I hit the ground

Overall Meaning

The Monophonics’ song “Foolish Love” is a poignant depiction of lost love and nostalgic memories. The song opens with a description of a childhood crush, with the singer reminiscing about playful horse rides and innocent competition. The lyrics then shift to a darker tone with the repetition of “Bang bang, she shot you down” - this line serves as a metaphor for the abrupt and painful ending of a relationship. The tone of the song is melancholic, with the singer reflecting on a love that seems to have been reckless and short-lived.

As the song continues, the lyrics turn back to happier memories, with the singer recalling the time when they were finally able to be together. However, this happiness is short-lived, as the lyrics reveal that the relationship eventually fell apart. The final lines of the song express regret and sorrow over the lost love, with the singer acknowledging that they didn’t even have the chance to say goodbye.

What makes this song so powerful is that the lyrics are simultaneously nostalgic and tragic. The contrast between the joyful memories of the past and the painful ending of the relationship highlights the complexity of love and the inevitable pain that comes with it.

I feel your touch, but you've been gone some time
I see your face, but that's only in my mind
So I do what I can, just to get you back
Cause just can't shake the you so get my life on track
Oh my my, I miss you so much
and the way you held me tight
Oh why why, is it so tough?
Cause I can't seem to break away from your foolish love
Oh you got me where you want me
Oh I can't stop this feeling
I'm just a fool for you woman
These games got me dizzy
Girl I won't down
I can't take anymore of this love merry-go-round
I don't know what else to do, just to get you back
Cause you don't love me no more and that's a fact
Oh my my, I miss you so much
And the way you held me tight
Oh why why, is it so tough?
Cause I can't seem to break away from your foolish love
Oh you got me where you want me
Oh I can't stop this feeling
Oh I'm just a fool for you baby
And you got me where you want me
No I can't stop this feeling
I'm just a fool for you woman
No I can't help my heart, no no See how I'm doing with you and I'm groovin' on
I've had enough of heartbreak for far too long
but no man would ???
Even in fifty years it's quite the choice I've made
Oh my my, I miss you so much
And the way you held me tight
Oh why why, is it so tough?
Cause I can't seem to break away from your foolish love
Oh you got me where you want me
Oh I can't stop this feeling
I'm a fool for you baby
Yeah you got me where you want me
No I can't stop this feeling I got
I'm a fool for you honey baby
Ain't nothing gon' help my heart, no no

I'm too young to have experienced the 70's (born in 82), but I grew up with music from the 60's and 70's.
And this make me think about my dad's vinyl collection, and made me wish I had seen the 70's.
That funky, groovy sound.
Damn good!
