Medicine
Monster Magnet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Place the stones in a circle of twelve
Give my night to a brother of the bell

Rise from the light
That swallows me whole
Dig yourself
Dig yourself
Sun comes up one brave day
Foll of the cobra, dries the sweat off my face

Righteous meat
Righteous town
Dig yourself
Dig yourself,baby

Down that medicine now yeah baby
Down that mdicine now my my my baby

Bitch got soul
She bathes on time
The lord got lazy
Took the world from behind

Life is sweet
Sweet as hell
Dig yourself,baby
Dig yourself,baby

Down that medicine now yeah baby
Down that medicine now my my my baby

Brother and sisters
Let us make no mother fucking mistake
Your violation will be televised

Bitch got soul

Bitch got soul
Bitch got soul

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Monster Magnet's song "Medicine" incorporate elements of mysticism and ritualism. The first two lines, "Place the stones in a circle of twelve / Give my night to a brother of the bell," suggest the creation of a sacred space, possibly for a ritual or ceremony. The following lines, "Rise from the light / That swallows me whole / Dig yourself / Dig yourself," could be interpreted as a call to transcendence, to rise above the mundane world and connect with some kind of deeper truth or power. The repetition of "dig yourself" may refer to the act of digging or uncovering something, whether it be buried treasure or buried aspects of oneself.

The next stanza shifts to a more concrete image of a sunrise, and the singer's face being dried by the heat of the sun. This image is juxtaposed with the lines "Righteous meat / Righteous town," which could be interpreted as a commentary on the hypocrisy and corruption of society. The chorus, "Down that medicine now yeah baby / Down that medicine now my my my baby," reinforces the idea of transcendence or escape, but leaves it open-ended whether the medicine is literal or metaphorical.

The third stanza introduces the character of "bitch with soul," who is contrasted with a lazy lord who takes advantage of the world. This implies that the singer believes in some kind of spiritual or moral hierarchy, where the "bitch with soul" is more righteous than those in power. The last line, "Bitch got soul," is repeated three times, punctuating the song with the idea that soulfulness and righteousness are worth striving for.

Wyndorf and McBain are the shit, even Iggy was going soft. No one had the balls or brains to be themselves and simply deliver the goods. Everything was watered down with bands recording the drum tracks digitally and spending ass loads on coke/studio time. Then out of nowhere comes MM with the full 'staches, the longhair and most importantly the tunes. It was as if they never even left the basement for 15 years and then blammo just steamrolled everything in their path into oblivion.

bollocks, Motorhead had 1916, Corrosion of Conformity had Blind, Cathedral — Forest of Equilibrium, Entombed had Clandestine. Monster Magnet steamrolled fuck all.

Monster Magnet rules! Kyuss, Acid King, Alabama Thunderpussy, Texas Hippie Coalition, all are great, but NOBODY has the edge, originality, presence, sound, and consistency this guys display all the time! Oh yes, and that retro feeling...

Mikael Bayusik

Great song! I saw them live in 1993. Memorable show. They played most of Tab and a couple tracks off this album to about 10 people. Talked with Dave Wyndorf for awhile. Interesting guy.
