Nights In White Satin
Moody Blues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send

Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say any more

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh how I love you

Gazing at people, some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through they can't understand
Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be, you will be in the end

And I love you
Yes I love you
Oh how I love you
Oh how I love you

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send

Beauty I've always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say any more

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh how I love you
Oh how I love you
'Cause I love you
Yes I love you

Oh how I love you
Oh how I love you

Overall Meaning

Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin" is a song that is highly emotive and has been interpreted in several ways by listeners over the years. Most often, the song is seen as a depiction of a love affair that has never quite reached its full potential or consummation. The repeated refrain of "nights in white satin" echoes the persistent feeling of longing and incompleteness that the singer experiences. The lyrics suggest that the writer has been harbouring deep emotions of love and longing and expressing these through pensive letters that never see the light of day. He is desperately in love with someone, but the relationship seems unreachable and unattainable.

The lines, "Just what you want to be, you will be in the end" seem to suggest an acceptance that things might not work out as planned. The song ends with the lines, "Just what the truth is, I can't say any more / 'Cause I love you / Yes, I love you / Oh, how I love you," which reinforce the idea that the emotion of love is complex and multilayered. It also shows that the writer's intention is to express his feelings and to address the person he loves. However, he never really reaches an endpoint, and the love story remains incomplete.

I'm 70 years old now and this song still overwhelms me with emotion. I always get goosebumps and will always remember the joys of playing the album over and over and over and over..... It was one of the first exposures to orchestral music for me back then. "Band member Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 while touring in Belgium and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward."

Oh, how I love you
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

I was and still there. Unlike today's so-called music, you can hear the words, you can feel the words, you can be there... Carry on young folks, carry on.
