Hometown Heroes
Moon Taxi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah we go way back where we started from
We were hometown heroes high enough for everyone
Yeah we go way back where we started from
Oh we used to say it's one for all and all for

One by one, they went their ways
Some stay close and others fade away
These memories aren't what they seem
The house I knew, was it all a dream?

Yeah we go way back where we started from
We were hometown heroes high enough for everyone
Yeah we go way back where we started from
Oh we used to say it's one for all and all for one

One for and all for

Once I knew life moves too fast
Take a million pictures, live inside the photographs
'Cause colors stay but we have changed
And when our hearts are heavy, know I love you all the same

Yeah we go way back where we started from
We were hometown heroes high enough for everyone
Yeah we go way back where we started from
Oh we used to say it's one for all and all for one

One for and all for

'Cause it was beautiful, we were beautiful
Once upon a time
And now we're in the wild
Am I still the child I used to be?

Yeah we go way back where we started from
We were hometown heroes high enough for everyone
Yeah we go way back where we started from
Oh we used to say it's one for all and all for one

All for one
One for all and all for one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Moon Taxi's song "Hometown Heroes" reflect on the bonds and nostalgia of growing up in a small town. The opening lines, "Yeah we go way back where we started from, We were hometown heroes high enough for everyone," emphasize the shared experiences and sense of pride felt by the individuals in the song. They were once seen as heroes in their community, achieving high enough status to be celebrated by everyone around them.

As the song progresses, the lyrics delve into the reality of growing up and how people change and drift apart. The line "One by one, they went their ways, Some stay close and others fade away" acknowledges the inevitable divergence of paths as they navigate through life. The memories of their hometown aren't always what they seem, as the line "The house I knew, was it all a dream?" suggests a sense of questioning and reflection on the past.

The chorus, "Oh we used to say it's one for all and all for one," captures the unity and camaraderie that once existed among these hometown heroes. In a small town, there is often a strong sense of community and support for one another.

The second verse brings a sense of introspection, acknowledging the rapid pace of life and the changes that come with it. The line "Once I knew life moves too fast, Take a million pictures, live inside the photographs" emphasizes the desire to capture and hold on to fleeting moments. Despite the changes and heavy hearts, the lyrics convey the enduring love for one another, stating "And when our hearts are heavy, know I love you all the same."

The bridge of the song reflects on the beauty and innocence of their past, questioning if they are still the same people they used to be. The line " 'Cause it was beautiful, we were beautiful, Once upon a time, And now we're in the wild, Am I still the child I used to be?" highlights the longing for simplicity and the desire to hold on to the purity of their youth.

This song conjures all the feels. I could see us all bawling our eyes out to this song set to a video of all the hometown heroes who are saving lives and taking care of others right now-- the medical workers, emergency responders, the grocery workers and farmers keeping us fed, teachers, the journalists bringing us information, the musicians and writers and artists helping us emotionally process, and all the community organizers and folks bringing all they've got.
