Why?
More Machine Than Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why can't you take a look at yourself
Before you try and judge someone else?

Why can't there be some understanding?
Why can't there be some sense of hope?
Why can't I see good will between men?
Why can't there be some joy in the end?
Why must we live so blinded by faith?
Why must we live isolated in grace?
Why must we keep this intolerant face?
Leaving it all just laid to waste

Why can't you take a look at yourself
Before you try and judge someone else?

Why must I feel this cold and alone?
Why must I feel this sense of regret?
Rotting away, I dwell in my rage
Why must I know the depth of my hate?

Why can't you take a look at yourself
Before you try and judge someone else?

Why can't I see good will between men?
Why can't there be some joy in the end?

Why can't you take a look at yourself
Before you try and judge someone else?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to More Machine Than Man's "Why?" express a poignant sense of frustration, disillusionment, and confusion over the human condition. The first verse challenges the listener to examine their own behavior before criticizing others, suggesting that we often project our own flaws and shortcomings onto those around us instead of seeing ourselves clearly. The following lines yearn for understanding, hope, and goodwill between people, lamenting the strife, intolerance, and waste that seem to define our existence. The second verse turns inward, describing the singer's feelings of coldness, regret, and anger, and questioning why they must be burdened with such intense emotions. The final refrain brings the song full circle, repeating the plea to see ourselves honestly and avoid judging others, while still holding out hope for a better future.

In addition to its poetic power, "Why?" is notable for its unique blend of electronic and industrial sounds with more traditional rock instrumentation. The song features driving drum beats, grinding guitars, and haunting synthesizers, creating a dense and atmospheric wall of sound that perfectly complements the lyrics' emotional weight. More Machine Than Man is also known for their political activism and social commentary, which infuses many of their songs with a sense of urgency and relevance.

Brilliant work!!! We love you Batio! You are great and wonderful. Always good to see you play. Keep on shining great star!!!!

Roy

The sweeps are crazy clean. Michael Angelo Batio is definitely the best shredder of all time. The best part is that he is now giving back to all guitarists with his online free lessons. \m/

Nedim K (nedomedo)

Oh? 😮 Where can I find those free lessons?

Stephen Snow

@SonSauvage Yep I agree, music is such a subjective thing, it's best just to enjoy it.

SonSauvage

@Stephen Snow yeah determining who the "best shredder" is a wasted effort. I mean honestly there are so many jazz/fusion and metal guys that can play circles around the legendary shredders we all love if that's the goal. Like Tim Miller, the late Holdsworth, Alex Machacek, etc. But in the end it's all about the music

Charlsberg

@Stephen Snow I skimmed over that name and didn't even know he was also in DragonForce to be honest. I couldn't object to someone I knew nothing about really

Stephen Snow

@Charlsberg I understand why you'd say that, he's not as surgically accurate live as the others I've mentioned, but he can improvise some pretty amazing solos on the spot. Buckethead is my personal favorite guitarist of all time, but I've heard him screw up as well. I'm kind of surprised you didn't object to Sam Totman though, since they're from the same band and I'd call them equals.

This guy is holding back about 1000% of his actual ability so he doesn't scare everyone away. Nice song. Also nice to see a classic style video in 2020

Juan Duarte

He is holding back I agree

Apart from the fact that the music is SO refreshing (like you completely revamped yourself on this album), I wanted to say that whoever edited your video... you should keep him!!! Then it dawned on me it's probably Max, so yep, use him and his editing talent as much as you can :D
