Looking out the window of an empty room
Don't know where I am, or how long I've been gone
Listening to nothing but the sound of my breathing
And my tears that hit the floor now I'm alone
You're the one that told me to surrender
Lay down my weapons and I met your demands
And I gave up and I gave you everything
[Chorus]
And I paid, I paid, I paid
But you killed me anyway
[Verse 2]
Nothing I could ever do could keep you satisfied
I told you I would pay it all if you named the price
But all the money in the world can't show you my worth
But I spent it all so I could survive
[Chorus]
And I paid, I paid, I paid
I paid, I paid, I paid
But you killed me anyway
[Bridge]
I gave, I gave, I gave and I gave
But you take, take it all away
[Verse 3]
Looking out the window with an empty heart
Don't know where I am, but I know I'm alone
Used to be that I was living for you
But now I'm dying here now that you're gone
[Outro/Chorus]
'Cause I paid, I paid, I paid
But you killed me baby
I paid, I paid, I paid and I paid
And I paid, and I paid
I paid, I, I paid
But you killed me anyway
The lyrics of Morgan James's song "Ransom" depict a person who has sacrificed everything for someone they love, only to be betrayed and ultimately destroyed. The singer finds themselves in an empty room, feeling lost and unsure of their whereabouts and how long they've been separated from their loved one. The atmosphere is somber, with silence broken only by the sound of their breathing and tears hitting the floor. It is evident that the singer has surrendered, following the demands of their lover to lay down their weapons and give everything they have, including their heart.
Despite their willingness to give up everything and fulfill any requests, the singer realizes that nothing they do can ever satisfy their lover. They are willing to pay any price, even if it means spending all their money, in an attempt to demonstrate their worth. However, no amount of wealth can show the true value of their existence.
The chorus serves as a painful acknowledgment that, despite all the sacrifices and offerings, their lover still brings about their destruction. The repetition of "I paid, I paid, I paid" emphasizes the singer's desperation and the futility of their efforts. They have been killed metaphorically, emotionally, and possibly even figuratively.
The bridge highlights the asymmetric nature of the relationship. The singer has given everything they could, but their lover continuously takes away without reciprocation. This one-sided dynamic further accentuates the singer's feelings of despair and being taken for granted.
In the final verse, the singer is left with an empty heart, feeling lost and alone. Previously, their life had revolved around their lover, but now they are left to suffer in their absence. The outro repeats the agonizing chorus, emphasizing the singer's realization that, despite all they have paid, their lover has still brought them to ruin.
Overall, "Ransom" is a poignant and heartbreaking portrayal of a relationship where one person sacrifices everything for love, only to be betrayed and left devastated in the end.
