Last Laugh
Morgoth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I drown while I keep burning inside
My emptiness is larger than love
Turning out the sun in my heart
Gold and glory return to ashes again

Then this dream of yesterday
Make me try to feel tomorrow
I'd like to touch my lovely infancy
Again to get a point of this...

Last laugh
Another day and I keep going
Last laugh
Another cage but never the same

Then this dreams of insanity
Are brighter than I could believe
I'd like to touch my lovely infancy
Again to get a point of this

Last laugh
Another day and I keep going
Last laugh
Another cage but never the same

I drown while I keep burning inside
My emptiness is larger than love

Turning out the sun in my heart
Gold and glory return to ashes again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song Last Laugh by Morgoth speak about the emptiness and burning pain inside oneself that is overwhelming, even more so than love. The singer seems to be lost in a dream of the past and trying to make sense of the present-day. They wish to return to their childhood and innocence to grasp a better understanding of their current situation. The repeated line, "Last Laugh" suggests a sense of irony and hopelessness in the singer's situation as they continue to face another day, trapped in their own internal conflict.

The strong imagery of the sun in the heart, turning into ashes, evokes a sense of desolation and the loss of hope. It seems like the singer is struggling to find positivity in their life as they remain trapped in their own cage of thought. The lyrics also suggest a battle between sanity and insanity, with the latter appearing more alluring to the singer.

The overall message of the song seems to be one of hopelessness and the struggle to find meaning and purpose in life. The intense emotions, paired with the haunting melody, create a powerful and memorable listening experience.

Simply one of the best album in metal history. Way ahead of it's time. I can understand death metal Morgoth fans that they were dissapointed but hell, this album is a milestone in metal history. Unfortunately it was so underrated in it's time.

And still underrated...

"Way ahead of it's time"? Gimme a break! Did you live under a rock or what, man, come on! Prong, Ministry, Nine Inch, Cancer (puaj!), Pitchshifter, Godflesh anyone, Tiamat?

@dreat5665

indeed, ahead of their time while sounding eerily similar to killing joke

@stonerro

this is one of the best killing joke albums that killing joke never made!!

A personal experience I had with this song: six years ago I tried take my own life cause I personal lost, in mid of my depression I picked a thick rope to hang myself in the home bathroom, and I stood up the toilet just in the moment to jump to finish my life, in a near house somebody played very loud this song, suddenly i was hypnorized for this song then suddenly I was pushed to the ground falling and hitting my head in the ground, i felt huge shocked but i could look at mom grabbing the other extreme of the rope and with grasping voice, crying just I hear say "what's wrong with you, idiot?"... Its weird to say but really this song saved mi life and thanks forever Morgoth...

@thrasherVojti

Great video, Great album! Agree with shagrath37. Morgoth´s development was great. This band had always had a great unique atmosphere in it´s music. I like both their death metal and progressive/industrial period. Don´t know why so many people hate their newer music. Songs like Last Laugh, Curiosity, Watching the Fortune Wheel etc. brings my mind somewhere out of this world.

@filipzla
