While "Good" earned the band critical notoriety and substantial underground cred, they did not -- with this release or any subsequent -- break into the mainstream. After the release of Good, the band replaced Dupree with Billy Conway, a former bandmate of Sandman. Morphine's 1992 release of Cure for Pain, promoted by heavy touring, received some mainstream positive attention, selling over 300,000 copies worldwide and spawning a chart hit in many countries with the single Buena
Subsequent releases include Yes and Like Swimming.
On July 3, 1999, Mark Sandman collapsed on stage in Palestrina, Italy, a suburb of Rome. He was pronounced dead of a heart attack at the scene. He was 46. Morphine released The Night -- arguably their best effort -- posthumously in 2000.
After Sandman's death, the remaining band members reformed and continued to record as Twinemen and later as The Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band
In 2004, the Mark Sandman box set Sandbox was released by Hi-n-Dry, Mark Sandman's own label. It contains two CDs and a DVD of previously unreleased material spanning Sandman’s musical career. The DVD features clips from early Sandman shows, interviews from the Morphine tours, and various videos from other Sandman solo and group projects, such as Treat Her Right.

In Spite of Me
Morphine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They smiled patiently with disbelief
I always knew you would succeed no matter what you tried
And I know you did it all in spite of me
Still I'm proud to have know you for the short time that I did
Glad to have been a step up on your way
Proud to be part of your illustrious career
In spite of me
Late last night I saw you in my living room
You seemed so close but yet so cold
For a long time I thought that you'd be coming back to me
Those kind of thoughts can be so cruel
So cruel And I know you did it all in spite of me
In spite of me
Morphine's song In Spite Of Me is a melancholic and reflective ballad that speaks about a lost love and the ways in which the person addressed in the lyrics has moved on and succeeded, in spite of the singer's doubts and shortcomings. The song is introspective, as the singer is not only coming to terms with the fact that their relationship is over, but also acknowledging their own limitations and recognizing the other person's achievements.
The first verse tells the story of the singer sharing information about their ex-partner with a stranger, who listens skeptically. The singer goes on to express their belief that the person they once loved would succeed regardless of the obstacles they faced. This idea is underlined in the chorus, as the repeated phrase "And I know you did it all in spite of me" emphasizes the singer's low self-esteem and feelings of inferiority. However, there is also a sense of pride and admiration towards the person addressed in the lyrics. The singer is happy to have known them and to have played a small part in their success. The second verse switches to a more surreal setting, as the singer sees their ex in their living room. The encounter is described as both close yet distant, with the person being cold and removed. This may indicate that the other person has moved on emotionally and is no longer interested in a romantic relationship. The singer acknowledges that it's cruel to entertain the hope of a reunion under such circumstances, and they admit that their ex's success is a testament to their strength and ability to thrive independently.

Tan cruel...
Y yo sé que lo hiciste todo a pesar de mí...
A pesar de mí.
