1999

I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray
But when i woke up this morning could a sworn is was judgment day
The sky was all a purple there were people running everywhere
Trying to run from they're destruction, and no I didn't even care
They say two thousand zero zero party's over oops out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like its 1999
They say two thousand zero zero, party's over oop out of time
So tonight I'm gonna cry like its 1999

Once in a lifetime

Time isn't holding us, time isn't after us
Time isn't holding us, time isn't after us
Letting the days go by, letting the days go by,
Letting the days go by, letting the days go by.
You may find yourself living in a shack and shack
You may find yourself in another part of the world
You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
You may find yourself with a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
You may ask yourself, how did I get here

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing under ground
Into the pool again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing under ground

You may ask your self where is this house
You may ask yourself where does this highway go
You may ask yourself am I right or wrong
You may ask yourself "My God, what have I done?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing under ground
Into the pool again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing under ground

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "1999" by Mosus & S.P.Y explore themes of escapism and reflection, using the turning point from the 20th to the 21st century as a backdrop. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that they were dreaming when they wrote the song, asking for forgiveness if their words go astray. They describe waking up and feeling like it's judgment day, with a purple sky and people running in panic. The singer confesses to not caring about the destruction, instead deciding to party like it's the year 1999. This repetition of "two thousand zero zero, party's over" emphasizes the idea of a time limit and the need to seize the moment before it's too late.

The next part of the song, "Once in a lifetime," references the famous Talking Heads song of the same name. It explores the concept of time and how it shapes our lives. The lyrics suggest that time is not holding anyone accountable or coming after them. Instead, the days go by, and individuals may find themselves in unexpected situations or places. It poses the question of how one got to their current circumstances, indicating self-reflection and an introspective search for meaning.

The repetition of "let the days go by" emphasizes the passing of time and the feeling of being swept along without control. The mention of living in a shack, being behind the wheel of a large automobile, or having a beautiful house and wife represents the different paths one can take in life, highlighting the unpredictability of individual journeys. The section concludes with the singer asking themselves how they arrived in their current situation, expressing a sense of bewilderment and possibly regret.

The phrase "same as it ever was" is a direct reference to "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads, signaling a continuation of the theme of introspection and self-questioning. It implies that despite the passage of time and changing circumstances, some aspects of life remain the same. The final word, "coconut," seems to be a disconnected phrase or word thrown in that may not have a direct connection to the overall meaning of the song. It could be interpreted as an intentionally random element or perhaps a symbol of the unexpected and inexplicable things that can happen in life.

Overall, the lyrics of "1999" touch on the fleeting nature of time, the need to seize the present moment, and the search for meaning and reflection in one's journey through life. It reflects on the anxieties and uncertainties that arise during times of transition and encourages listeners to embrace the present and question how they arrived at their current circumstances.
