Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

Hey, hey, where are the losers now
Gone inside outlaws every day a losing streak
Every day they tell us lies
The sky, the sky is crushing you
The wall, the walls are touching you too
Even the floor is clutching you
and they're watching you
Blind justice hears the voice of bribery all right,
Hey, hey, but she don't see the joke
There's only treason left when you put out the light
You can't see who it was that spoke
The sky, the sky is crushing you
The wall, the walls are touching you too
Even the floor is clutching you
And all the eyes you ever closed are open,
and they're watching you
There ain't no windows in the hallways anymore
Hey, hey, the news is awful bad
Two schizophrenics but I can't see them at all
Anymore and I'll go mad
The sky is crushing you
And now the walls are closing in on you
Even the floor is tripping you
And all the eyes you ever closed are open,
and they're watching you
The lyrics to Motorhead’s song ‘Asylum Choir’ are dark and ominous, exploring themes of darkness and the harsh realities of life. The first verse describes the feeling of being completely lost and devoid of hope, with darkness filling the singer’s eyes. The chorus paints a picture of an oppressive atmosphere, with the sky, walls, and floor all ‘clutching’ the subject, as if the world is closing in on them. The second verse touches on themes of corruption and treason, with justice being swayed by bribery and the truth being hidden. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the suffocating feeling of being trapped in a dark, claustrophobic world. The final verse provides a bleak image of a world with no escape, where even the news is terrible and the subject is losing their grip on reality. The chorus repeats once more, hammering home the sense of being trapped and watched.
Overall, the lyrics to ‘Asylum Choir’ create a disturbing and oppressive atmosphere that speaks to the harsh realities of life. The feeling of being trapped and suffocated is palpable, and the themes of corruption and darkness add to the sense of hopelessness. Despite the bleakness of the song’s message, the raw and energetic musical style of Motorhead helps to give the lyrics an edge and intensity that makes for a powerful listening experience.
