Take Me Home Country Roads
Mountain Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gather round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrops in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road I get a feeling
That I should've been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

Take me home, country roads
Take me home, country roads

Overall Meaning

The song "Take Me Home Country Roads" by Mountain Man is a beautiful tribute to the natural beauty and peace of West Virginia. The opening lines "Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River" paint a vivid picture of a luscious environment that has been around for millions of years - the mountains and river are older than the trees! The lyrics go on to describe the scenery in poetic terms, highlighting the misty taste of moonshine and the teardrops in the singer's eyes as he reflects on the beauty of his hometown.

The song is about the longing for a place one can call home. As the lyrics suggest, the singer has moved away from West Virginia and is reminiscing about his memories of home, missing his "mountain mamma." The song even mentions the miner's lady, highlighting the importance of coal mining in West Virginia, as well as the “stranger to blue water” which is a nod to the fact that West Virginia is a landlocked state. The song’s nostalgic tone suggests that no matter where life takes us, nothing can quite compare to the comfort of a familiar place.

What I love about this band the most is that you can hear in their music how much they love playing music together, you can hear the time and consideration poured into the sound, and through that sound share in that feeling.

This is absolutely so beautiful. This is like a new reflection on a forgotten memory of childhood for me, in the best way. Thank you, Mountain Man. When I was a kid in Northern AZ, I had the fondest image of "mountain men" and basically any guy with a beard, calm demeanor, and a plaid shirt was a nice person connected with nature in my mind.

Just found this band, love them!

As a native WV Mountaineer... GREAT rendition. God I love this song... they had us sing it in music class in elementary school, then at WVU the best bars would break out in loud sing-alongs, especially after football games
