Of course. Mozarts most important supporter, H M Emperor Joseph II, passed away. His brother and successor was not a friend of Mozart and especially not of freemasonry.

No. Treble clef in cello parts before the twentieth-century were written an octave higher than concert pitch, obviating the need for the tenor clef, which was never used for the cello in those days. The cellist is playing the part correctly; you’re just reading it wrong. Since this notation, by the way, applies to the entire quartet (and, in fact, all three Prussian quartets put the cello in the treble clef extensively), I wonder why you’re singling out this particular passage.,

Why is the cello written up an octave from which it is played, sometimes?

It is called “false” treble clef, and it was used by some German publishers in the 19th C. If the clef occurs directly within a bass clef passage, it is played an octave lower than written.

It sounds nothing like how Dvorak would be interpreted. I don't know why people persist with these foolish comments on you tube. The Alban Berg Quartet are a fine quartet with more of an idea about what they are doing than you have.

@F Bordewijk Exaggerated misapplication of an offhand rule of thumb. We are taught not to “Romanticize” pre-nineteenth-century music and many people incapable of interpreting and analyzing music imaginatively, cling to this maxim desperately. Expression in music was not, in fact, invented in the 1800’s.
