Among the post-industrial decay of the once mighty Motor City Detroit he began to revel in the enriching world of music, first learning to play the piano from his mother, a gospel singer and piano teacher. Soon he began toying with drum machines and turntables, producing skeletal hip-hop tracks as a young teen.
Today, Mainor is the originator of pure ghettotech. At the helm of Electrofunk's distribution arm, he also controls the destiny of his fellow ghettotech peers in Detroit as they try and spread their sound outside of the city. Whether or not the rest of the world is ready for this Detroit-bred, post-modern style of urban music is an unanswered question, but there is no questioning the fact that Mr. De' may just be the most important man in that crusade.

Say What
Mr. De' Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Earn 3000$ in good years and in bad ones it's half as much
They're fruit tramps like their parents have been and like their children will be as well
They still get diminutive wages and people say they'll someday go to hell
Linda is 23 years and Luther Henry has 13 years more
They're picking cherries in Maine and strawberries right outside your door
Many month it's been raining the harvest is rotting in the fields
Take heed what I say this can't be today
Take heed what I say this can't be today
A strong back and a lack of will-power is not everything that you need
A belly full of hard liquor eases the work in the field
Playing poker in the night and sipping a bottle of gin
Is the only pleasure they get it's the only game they're able win
They get up at four in the morning start picking before the sun's coming up
Eight hours later many baskets are filled but they cannot give up
For three more hours they pick in the parching sun
And at five o'clock in the evening a 25$ job it is done
Take heed what I say this can't be today
Take heed what I say this can't be today
They all are American people but people treat them like dogs
Seems that men become animals when they pick in the morning fog
Rich men should know that all fruits that they eat are picked by people like Henry
Then they'd give them enough money and not only one third of their fee
For a short time they settled up north near the border of Canada
But their blood was too thin for the cold and I don't know where they now are
Luther Henry suffers from cancer and he wants to go home for to die
In 1992 they all feel so bad that they just can't stop cryin'
Take heed what I say this can't be today
Take heed what I say this can't be today
Love is their only religion their delight and for their children they live
Though they are starving with them and they don't have enough for to give
Luther's still living and he don't want to die
But before he will go to hell he'll go out and pick under blue sky
Take heed what I say this can't be today
Take heed what I say this can't be today
The lyrics to Mr. De's song Say What express regret and apology for causing someone pain and sorrow. The singer acknowledges that they have made a mistake and hurt their loved one, and they ask for forgiveness. The repeated refrain "What can I say, dear, after I say I'm sorry?" indicates a sense of helplessness and desperation - the singer wants to make things right but is unsure how to do so.
The first verse begins with the singer expressing confusion and regret: they don't know why they made their loved one cry but admit they were in the wrong. However, the singer also acknowledges that their apology alone is not enough - their loved one has a right to be angry and hurt, and they shouldn't simply forgive and forget without some kind of amends being made.
The second verse acknowledges the pain the singer has caused their loved one, and expresses surprise that the tables have turned - it is now the singer who is crying and seeking comfort from the person they hurt. The repetition of the refrain shows the urgency and importance of the singer's desire to make things right, but they are also aware that there may not be a simple answer.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of sincere remorse and a desire to fix things, but also an acknowledgment that doing so may be difficult or even impossible.
