Kids
MGMT Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You were a child
Crawling on your knees toward it
Making mama so proud
But your voice is too loud
We like to watch you laughing
You pick the insects off plants
No time to think of consequences
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
The water is warm
But it's sending me shivers
A baby is born
Crying out for attention
The memories fade
Like looking through a fogged mirror
Decision to decisions are made and not bought
But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot
I guess not
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees
"Kids" by MGMT is a song about the youthful desire for excitement and adventure, and the consequences of indulging in those desires without self-control or consideration for the future.
The song begins by addressing the listener as a child, crawling on their knees towards something they desire. The imagery conveys a sense of innocence and vulnerability, while the mention of the child's voice being too loud suggests an eagerness to be heard and noticed. The chorus highlights the theme of control, with the repetition of the phrase "Control yourself, take only what you need from it" emphasizing the importance of self-restraint and consideration for the consequences of one's actions.
The second verse shifts to a more abstract and introspective tone, with the water being warm but sending shivers down the singer's spine, suggesting a mix of pleasure and unease. The metaphor of a baby crying out for attention highlights the need for validation and recognition, while the memories fading like a fogged mirror suggest a lack of clarity and purpose in one's past experiences. The final lines acknowledge the inevitability of making decisions, but express a sense of surprise at the unexpected pain that comes with them.
Overall, "Kids" explores the tension between the desire for excitement and the need for self-control, emphasizing the importance of taking only what is necessary and avoiding the temptation to indulge recklessly in one's impulses.

@@daddyo1176If I may add? Some have put it more bluntly than I would, but, it's pretty apropos.
"Live with crazy for long enough, you start to go crazy, yourself."
Manic depressives, or dominant personalities, or subjugates, all... kinda find their pieces in a puzzle, and remain there, until pushed. It's homeostasis. It happens, but nobody should be forced or obligated to remain in that state.
For some, it's a choice, to do so for the sake of others' stability, in the case of the elderly, or the young. They need a sense of stability. A rudder, if you will, but one that they can take hold of, if they have the will.
Then, wait for the right moment, and, *BOOM!" They have their moment, well, one of them.
Punctuation marks. Sorry, if I'm getting a tad philosophical. I was a war medic, artist on a bunch of AAA titles, I see them vacillating, and, "But, now!"
Game industry is largely timing + talent, and, that old adage, "It's not what you know, it's who you know?"
Addendum. "It's what you know about who you know."

If that kid is out there comment and tell me you turned out okay
@SaraAlexi
I imagine there was a lot of misdirection and unseen safeguards to ensure the child hardly saw anything.

I sure do hope the monsters were just CGI generated

I was a new mom the year this song came out and this video devastated me. The song brought out this sense of nostalgia, mourning my childhood and anxiety at having to be a grown up and take care of this baby who needed me so much. The dangers of the world really come into focus when you're a first time mom and wanting to protect this precious baby from everything but knowing you can't- at least not forever. Now my "baby" is 16 and I'm having to learn to let go as she grows into an amazing young woman. It's scary. So here i am watching this video and crying, again.

I feel this very much, I was in my early years of college when I heard this, and now I'm almost 33. A lot has changed for me since then, for the better and for the worse. Back then I was much more free. Just take every day as a moment to be present in, to grow, learn and hopefully be healed- I'm not yet out of the woods, but I love what I've come to learn over time and along with music!
@marshallclifton1329
Wishing the best for you and your child. Music makes me feel a wild range of emotions and I can only imagine being a parent, which I am not yet.

Me sinto com medo pelo futuro incerto também, vestibular, faculdade, emprego novo tudo tendo que recomeçar novamente, é nostálgico e assustador ao mesmo tempo.
