Leave Me Alone
Mr. Doom Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God knows things could be worse
But it's hard seeing you age
The man I once knew staring back at me
Baby things sure ain't the same

I'm trying to be better
Working to understand
The changes you're making
To be a better man

I'm still listening i'm still loving
I'm still listening we're still struggling

Hard truths bite my heels
These roots have no home
The only way I know you love me
Is when you leave me alone
Please just leave me alone
Please just leave me alone
Won't you leave me alone
Won't you leave me alone

No one taught me better than you
There will be highs and there will be lows
Not a lot has to change
Things just can't stay the same

Hard truths bite my heels
These roots have no home
The only way I know you love me
Is when you leave me alone
Please just leave me alone
Please just leave me alone
Won't you leave me alone
Won't you leave me alone

I assumed too little
And we lost too much
When it comes to love
A lesson learned isn't learned enough

I was damaged
You were exposed
When it comes to love
When it comes to love
When it comes to love
A lesson learned isn't learned enough

Hard truths bite my heels
These roots have no home
The only way I know you love me
Is when you leave me alone
Please just leave me alone
Please just leave me alone
Won't you leave me alone
Won't you leave me alone

Please just leave me alone
Please just leave me alone
Please just leave me alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Leave Me Alone" by Mr. Doom express the difficulty of seeing someone you care about age and change. The singer is struggling to come to terms with the fact that the man he once knew is no longer there, and he is trying to understand and support the changes that the person is making. However, at the same time, he is also asking for space and isolation, which he believes is the only way for him to feel loved.

The song continues with the singer acknowledging that there are hard truths that he must face, and that he couldn't hold on to the past forever. The chorus repeats the plea for solitude and distance, even though he still loves and listens to the person.

The last part of the song describes the singer's realization that he has learned a lesson about love, at the cost of losing too much. He confesses that he was damaged and that the person he cared about has been exposed. The song reaches its climax with the repetition of the plea for isolation, which is then followed by the repeated word "alone."

Overall, "Leave Me Alone" by Mr. Doom is a dynamic and emotional song that explores the complexities of love and loss. It poses questions about how we can support those we care about, even as they change, and whether it's possible to love someone without sacrificing too much for their sake.

A lot of people say the “Chinese kid” line is a reference to Dan The Automator, but I have my doubts about that. Look at the line in the context of the overall track, which of course is a sweeping critique of the rap industry at large. The line in context reads:

“A&R been trying to figure me out for years
Trying to re-duplicate me
But they can’t, so they hate me.
While white boys run the head of black music
With a Japanese assistant
What does a Chinese kid know about the rap game?
That’s a shame.”

I’ve always interpreted that as a general comment on the appropriation of rap (“black music”) by others (“white boys” with “Japanese assistants”) who ultimately don’t understand it, or at least the part of it which Keith occupies (A&R can’t figure him out).

Inferring a reference to Automator doesn’t really make sense to me (why would he refer to him as someone’s “assistant”, and in the middle of what is otherwise a more general critique of the industry?) and it isn’t really Keith’s style. If Keith did intend to diss him, I’m sure he would’ve come up with something much better and more targeted than just “what does [he] know about the rap game”. It doesn’t add up for me and I think there are better interpretations of this line.
