Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper first met in high school in Philadelphia and later reconnected in Los Angeles in 2016. Their shared love for music led them to collaborate once again. They named the project after a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near their hometown. Their debut single, "Astrovan," gained rapid streaming success, attracting the attention of drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau.
The band made their debut in 2016 with the release of their single "Astrovan," which was recorded in Los Angeles by Quinn, Cooper, and Byrnes.
In 2017, Mt. Joy signed with Dualtone Records, further solidifying their presence in the music industry. This was followed by the release of three singles in 2017: "Sheep," "Cardinal," and "Silver Lining," with the latter reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Triple A charts.
Throughout 2017, the now five-piece band recorded additional tracks with producer Jon Gilbert at his home studio in Pasadena, California, and released their self-titled debut album, Mt. Joy, on March 2, 2018. The song "Silver Lining" went to #1 on the Billboard Triple A charts.
Following their initial success, Mt. Joy embarked on extensive touring, performing at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza, while also opening for notable bands like The Head and the Heart, The Shins, Whitney, and The Revivalists. They also headlined their own North American and European tours.
Unfortunately, their tour with The Lumineers was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Undeterred, Mt. Joy released their second studio album, "Rearrange Us," on June 5, 2020. The album was produced by Tucker Martine, known for his work with My Morning Jacket and Modest Mouse. The songs on "Rearrange Us" range from folk-stomps to psychedelic reflections and gospel elegies.
In April 2022, the band announced their third full-length album, Orange Blood, which was released on June 17, 2022. The album was recorded at Headroom Studios in Philadelphia. Four singles were released ahead of the album, "Lemon Tree", "Orange Blood," "Evergreen," and "Bathroom Light." Their headlining tour for the album started in June 2022 and runs through November 2022.
Bathroom Light
Mt. Joy Lyrics

In a Halloween costume
I'm an astronaut without you
We're twisting our way to the back of the bar
Yeah, locking the door, falling into the stall
Stripping you down to your jewelry
You're breaking the rules just for me
Got me falling in, got me falling in hard
So, come on, baby, let's do this right
I think I like falling in love in the bar bathroom light
I don't question it, I don't mess with it, I just go, go grab it
Tell your friends, tell your ma that you love who they are
'Cause someday we must return the movies in our brains
And these moments we can't fake
Yes, the angels never leak the expiration date, so
So, come on, baby, let's do this right
I think I like falling in love in the bar bathroom light
I won't question it, I won't mess with it, if it's there go grab it
Tell your friends, tell your ma that you love who they are
The lyrics of "Bathroom Light" by Mt. Joy capture a moment of spontaneity and reckless abandon in love. The song starts with the image of someone searching for an escape, represented by finding a lane to drive through. The mention of a Halloween costume and being an astronaut without the person they desire suggests a feeling of being lost or disconnected without them. The couple then navigates their way to the back of a bar, locking the door and finding themselves in a stall, symbolizing a hidden and intimate space.
The lyrics portray a sense of freedom and rebellion, as the person they desire breaks the rules just for them. The line "What a life under big stars and a good woman in charge" suggests a feeling of contentment and excitement in this adventurous love affair. There is a sense of surrender and vulnerability as they fall hard for each other.
The chorus emphasizes the simplicity and natural flow of their connection. The bathroom light becomes a metaphor for a moment of passionate love, and the singer finds comfort and joy in this unconventional setting. It's a moment where they don't question or complicate their feelings, but rather embrace and pursue them. The lyrics also highlight the importance of embracing and loving people for who they are, as they encourage the listener to tell their friends and family how much they appreciate them.
Overall, "Bathroom Light" captures a thrilling and unguarded moment of love in an unexpected place, celebrating the spontaneity and authenticity of deep connections.

The love of my life introduced me to this song. I was obsessed the moment I heard it. He passed away yesterday. This song has become the symbol of his love for me, it is mine. I am so grateful to have it, I feel his arms around me when I listen to this. Bathing in his love tonight. 2/19/23. Rest Easy, Sweet Genesis. I will keep you forever.
