viii
Mt. Wolf Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was so bittersweet
To have you time go with me
But the skies are my shin
And you're only hearing

To blame and to gain is hard
Never have we played the same fallen star
I can't say I hate you way you know, you know
You're not sent, you are my friend, alone, alone

And I got nothing to hide
With all the little do white
And if you know that you could break me
Then I'll accept the love forsaken

To blame and to gain is hard
Never have we played the same fallen star

I can't say I hate you way you know, you know
You're not sent, you are my friend, alone, alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "VIII" by Mt. Wolf are quite cryptic, with multiple possible interpretations that depend on the listener's experience and the cultural background. One possible reading of the song starts with the bittersweet feeling of having someone's company and then losing it, particularly evocative when the listener imagines a beautiful day passing by with someone they are fond of, but also applicable to other scenarios. Despite the pleasant experience, the singer acknowledges that their priorities are different, signaled by the image of the shining sky, while the person they were with is only hearing about it.

Then, the lyrics shift to a more complex dynamic between the two characters, where blame and gain are hard to discern, and they seem to have followed different paths. Linking the idea of blame to playing the same fallen star suggests that both attempted to reach a similar goal, but they might have taken different routes and one of them succeeded while the other couldn't. The singer then admits to not hating the person, even if their relationship is on fragile grounds, which is reinforced by the repetition of the word "alone." The song's closing lyrics add a sense of vulnerability and risk-taking, as the singer declares having nothing to hide and being open to love, even if they recognize that it could potentially leave them heartbroken.

Overall, the "VIII" lyrics encapsulate the bittersweetness of letting go of a cherished moment and capture an elusive feeling of ambiguity and insecurity that might come from unrequited love, career struggles, or other experiences where success or failure depends on subjective factors.

Lyrics
It was so bittersweet
To have you tangled with me
But the scars on my shin
And you're only hearing

To blame and to gain is hard
Never did we play the same from the start
I can't say I hate your way you know, you know
Should've sent you home my friend, alone, alone

And I got nothing to hide
With all a little too wide
And if you know that you could break me
Then I'll accept the love forsaken

To blame and to gain is hard
And never have we played the same from the start
I can't say I hate your way you know, you know
Should've sent you home my friend, alone, alone

If the vocals are what hit home, I recommend checking her out. Alexa Harley is slightly more active than her duo group Equal Echo. She never feels like this, however, but that is more to do with her collab with Mt. Wolf. She's much more lounge-y feeling.

If anyone can place her accent though, I'd love to figure it out. I know she's European, but I think she has a speech impediment which gives her such a unique shape to some of her words. Reminds me of Bjork a bit.
