32-20 Blues
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna get my 32-20, my baby she ridin' around in a
V8 Ford
Lord, I'm gonna get my 32-20, my little girl ridin'
Around in a V8 Ford
Well, you know it musta been a while ago, man, somebody
Went out my backdoor

That's the reason I carry my 32-20, that the reason I
Carries it ev'ryday
Lord, that's the reason I carry my 32-20, that's the
Reason I carries it ev'ryday
Well now, you know how she been runnin' around here,
Hmm,
I'd a-swear somebody gonna fade away

Lord, I got a lil' into trouble, down on Mr. Stovall's
Place
Lord, I have got in a little trouble, way down on Mr.
Stovall's place
Well now, you know my baby she been runnin' around here
Ridin',
And I had to sit down and change my ways

I got a pretty little thing, livin' down by Frairs
Point
I got a pretty little thing, she's livin' down on
Friars Fairs town
Now you know the reason I carry that 32-20, man, I
Don't want my little baby ridin' around

Play that thing boy!

Well that's why I tote my 32-20, little gal, ev'rywhere
I go
Yeah, that's why I tote my 32-20, baby, most ev'rywhere
I go

Well now, you know I'm tired of my baby runnin' around
Here ridin', man, down in a V8 Ford

Overall Meaning

In "32-20 Blues," Muddy Waters sings about carrying his .32-20 caliber pistol as protection against those who might harm him or his girlfriend. The song is an example of the Delta blues style of music, which originated in the rural Mississippi Delta region of the United States. The lyrics are straightforward and raw, describing situations that could have happened to anyone in that time and place.

The opening lines describe Waters' intention to bring his .32-20 pistol with him wherever he goes. This is because his girlfriend is riding around in a V8 Ford, which suggests that she is either prosperous or promiscuous. The reference to someone "going out my back door" suggests that someone has been trespassing or stealing from him, which is why he feels the need to carry a gun.

In the following verses, Waters describes getting into trouble on Mr. Stovall's property, possibly because he was caught trespassing or because someone was trying to harm him. He then mentions a woman he knows who lives in Friars Point, suggesting that he may be going there for protection or because he has a relationship with her. In the chorus, he emphasizes the importance of carrying his gun as protection against those who might harm him or his loved ones.

So pure ! Cette voix qui nous vient de si loin.
J'en suis ému.
Thank you Muddy.

I grew up on the farm next to Stovall's and was best friends with Carter Stovall Jr. He mentions, " I got a pretty little woman, living down by Farrell..." Farrell is the small town between our farm and Stovall's. Henry " Son" Sims lived on our farm. He was an older, mentor of Muddy's. It's good to see him here. That's the same house the Delta Blues Museum has on display now. Before it was moved to the museum, it was covered with that fake brick looking tar paper. The inside was wallpapered with old newspapers. When I was in my 20s, I went in there and peeled off pieces of newspapers that dated back to 1938. Some were Harpers' and Memphis Press Schimitar newspapers.

Damn!!! I can't believe I've never heard this before. All the blues i've listened to over the years, how could I have ever missed this one. Loved it.

@blueflame2

Never heard this before and its good. Muddy Water sounds like he indeed lived in the foot steps of Robert Johnson.

@KtomcatChas

This is a different song from Robert Johnson's 32-20 Blues. I had the privilege or seeing Muddy twice in my life. He WAS the Hootchie Kootchie Man.
