This is one of the greatest blues songs ever. When I first heard it live in Gleason's Musical Bar in Cleveland, Ohio, I was 15 years old. I walked into the club after paying admission, and suddenly everything went dead quiet. We didn't know what was about to happen, we frightened white boys in the middle of the ghetto. The next thing I heard was "Forty Days..."

Actually it was Little Walter on harp as portrayed in Cadillac Records. This came directly from wikipedia.

The song was recorded in January 1956 for Chess Records in Chicago during guitarist Pat Hare's first recording session with Waters.[1] Biographer Robert Gordon writes, "Hare's crunching power chords rippled with distortion that was well suited for blues in the rock and roll explosion".[2] In addition to Muddy Waters on vocals and Hare on guitar are Little Walter on harmonica, Willie Dixon on bass, possibly Fred Below or Francis Clay on drums, and Jimmy Rogers or Hubert Sumlin on second guitar.[2][6]

One of the benefits of growing old is having seen things that can no longer be seen. I saw Muddy, red Telecaster and all, several times from the late sixties to the early seventies. If there is a person who was a living bridge between Delta blues and Chicago (electric) blues, it's Muddy Waters. Ain't that a man! So many great nights of blues, but Muddy at Keystone Berkeley, 1971 was one, and Son House in Oceanside, north of San Diego, in 1969, are near the top of the list.

@TheRichard181 Amen, brother. By the time I first saw Muddy (1966), Junior Wells was playing harp, Walter having paid the price for his pain. Junior was amazing, but I don't know if anyone was ever bettter than Little Walter Jacobs. I'm a lucky man- old enough to have seen a lot of these legends, and to want to hear them back in the day. Some other time, my Son House story, the best night of blues I've ever heard. Supernatural. I'd say long live the blues, but they're already immortal.
