Indigo
Murphy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fire burning in a hill
The lines are rocky rough
Red angels wait to pick remains
The cindered shoulder
Of confused men

separate from their awe
With grey desire
He looks out mad
His soft grey indigo eyes

Indigo eyes

Asking

His heaven is uncovered not
A black tree blocks his way
His way is skating round a dome
(His way is in dismay)

The playmate sings

Like Orphee in some thunder world
Asking to be bathed in light
To be exemplified

With grey desire he looks out mad
His soft grey indigo eyes

Saw his past
He had dug for trust
With blind infected hands

And wondered as the hurt bit hard
Why the sacred weren't at hand

Only when his ears were deaf
To the angels light burst waves
Only when his ears were deaf

Did life turn from fog to fog
But not evil but estranged
But not evil but estranged

Indigo eyes, Indigo eyes
Indigo eyes, Indigo eyes

With grey desire
He looks out mad
His soft grey

Overall Meaning

In Murphy's song "Indigo," the lyrics portray a man who is struggling with his personal demons and a profound sense of confusion. The first stanza describes a scene of devastation and destruction, as if the man is observing the aftermath of an event that has shaken him to his core. The red angels waiting to pick up remains suggest a sense of loss, and the cindered shoulder of confused men implies that the destruction has left others bewildered and searching for answers. The phrase "separate from their awe" suggests that the man feels disconnected from the emotions others may be experiencing in the aftermath of the event.

The second stanza continues the theme of confusion and disorientation. The man's heaven is not uncovered, and a black tree blocks his way, representing the obstacles that stand in the way of achieving his goals. The playmate singing is like Orphee in some thunder world, asking to be bathed in light, which could represent the man's desire for enlightenment or insight into his situation. The phrase "with grey desire he looks out mad, his soft grey indigo eyes" suggests that the man is searching for answers and perhaps experiencing frustration or anger at his inability to find them.

The final stanza moves from confusion and disorientation to reflection and acceptance. The man sees his past, a time when he had dug for trust with blind infected hands. This suggests that he was trying to find answers or support, but without a clear understanding of what he was looking for, he ended up causing harm. The phrase "Only when his ears were deaf to the angels light burst waves" suggests that at some point, he was able to turn away from his demons and see the light. This allowed him to move from a life of fog to clarity and understanding, even if he still feels estranged from the world around him.

I remember hearing Indigo Eyes on WLIR FM radio in LI NY here, for the first time one afternoon driving home from work, and having the song just hit me right between the eyes. Went immediately later that week to get the album at Record World in Hicksville LI at the mall. You know you're hearing great art when a song does that to you. I vaguely knew Peter and Bauhaus
at the time, but buying Love Hysteria cemented my obsession with all of these guys. Honestly I'm glad there was never a video for the song, as this song in particular is "its own" video,
in a sense. It's all imagery, no need for a video.

Wow!

@Doctor Snake Eater and I've got the love of Jesus right here in my pretty green eyes (name the Clint Eastwood film, win a prize) Not indigo, but
in any case, yes, otherwise that would be accurate. "This is the new one from Peter Murphy...." etc. etc. I'm like in my car going " finally some GOOD MUSIC
IS COMING OUT!" Time to go to Record World. I was working at Crazy Eddies at the time and we didn't even have the LP so I had to go to the rival
record store to get it. I used to dread learning this one on the guitar but, turns out it's actually pretty easy. I use the old 12-string and it sounds pretty decent.

Would you say it hit you right between the... indigo eyes?

Scott- I agree. If you possess any imagination at all the song is Beautiful on its own. I've Loved it Forever💙💙
