Sweeping The Spotlight Away
Murray McLauchlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here's a plain simple song, without much to say
For times when plain circumstance
Finds me with someone whose world is all wrong
So they feel like they don't have a chance
It's alright to learn from the times you're a fool
But it don't pay to dwell on the past
Sometimes I think, I'm really a clown
But there's plenty of time left for that

The sun's goin' down on the midway tonight
The red stripes are turning to grey
But old Emmett's still out in the big top tonight
Sweeping the spotlight away

Here's a song for the rain on the trash can lids
And the nights when there ain't much to do
Here's a song for the face
That it sometimes seems
People always tell their troubles to
You might see a trace of a greasepaint face
On everyone comin' around
Don't you always laugh with a tear in your eye
When you laugh at a sad faced clown

The sun's goin' down on the midway tonight
The red stripes are turning to grey
But old Emmett's still out in the big top tonight
Sweeping the spotlight away

Somewhere there's a child that everyone hides
A prisoner that longs to be free
Boys and girls in a fantasy world
But I guess I'm just talkin' for me
But I feel him there, behind me somewhere
When the streetlights reflect in the rain
The sad-faced clown with his mouth turned down
Sweeping the spotlight away

The sun's goin' down on the midway tonight
The red stripes are turning to grey

But old Emmett's still out in the big top tonight
Sweeping the spotlight away

Overall Meaning

Murray McLauchlan's song, "Sweeping The Spotlight Away" is a simple and reflective tune about being there for someone when they need you. The singer talks about being with someone who feels like their whole world is crumbling apart and how he wrote this song for those moments without much to say. He believes that everyone has those moments when they struggle and knowing there's someone there with them through those struggles can make all the difference. The singer acknowledges that at times he's a fool, but he's not one to dwell on the past. He knows that there's plenty of time left to make mistakes and learn from them.

McLauchlan then goes on to describe the circus and the sadness that can underlie such an environment, particularly in the figure of the sad-faced clown. The circus is ending, the sun is going down, and the red stripes of the big top are turning to gray, but old Emmett is still out sweeping the spotlight away. The reference to this sad clown is the key to the song. The sad-faced clown is a symbol of the hidden sadness that everyone experiences, the child that everyone hides, the prisoner that longs to be free. The sad clown reminds us that we are not alone in our pain, and that behind every smile there is often a great deal of sadness.

Overall, "Sweeping the Spotlight Away" is about the struggles of everyday life and connecting with others to find solace and solidarity. It acknowledges the sadness that is present in all of us, even if it's hidden behind a smile, and reminds us of the importance of being there for one another.

The Hartford circus fire, which occurred on July 6, 1944, in Hartford, Connecticut, was one of the worst fire disasters in the history of the United States. The fire occurred during an afternoon performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus that was attended by 6,000 to 8,000 people. The fire killed 167 people and more than 700 were injured.
The fire began as a small flame after the lions performed, on the southwest sidewall of the tent, while the Great Wallendas were performing. Circus bandleader Merle Evans was said to have been the first to spot the flames, and immediately directed the band to play "The Stars and Stripes Forever", the tune that traditionally signaled distress to all circus personnel.
Because of the paraffin wax waterproofing of the tent, the flames spread rapidly. Many people were badly burned by the melting paraffin, which rained down from the roof. The fiery tent collapsed in about eight minutes according to eyewitness survivors, trapping hundreds of spectators beneath it. Because of a picture that appeared in several newspapers of sad tramp clown Emmett Kelly holding a water bucket, the event became known as "the day the clowns cried." wikipedia
