According to the Plug in Baby Songfacts, on the show Muse: The Making of Origin of Symmetry, which aired on the UK radio station Xfm, lead singer Matthew Bellamy described this song as: "A feeling of not being connected to each other, but we are, and it's a feeling of the mind evolving from the body, but when that happens you just get this yearn to do something physical and feel something sensational."
Released as the lead single from the album on 5 March 2001, "Plug In Baby" became the band's highest-charting single when it peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, until it was surpassed by "Time Is Running Out" in 2003.
Today, "Plug In Baby" is considered one of Muse's most notable songs, and has been featured on the live albums Hullabaloo Soundtrack (2002) and HAARP (2008).
"Plug In Baby" is often praised for its opening guitar riff; Total Guitar readers voted the riff as the 13th best of all-time in 2004. The beginning of the riff shows similarities to Bach's "Toccata and Fugue". Bellamy has also stated in a 2005 interview that it elaborates on the riff from DJ Shadow's track Organ Donor.
The bassline has been noted as being very similar to that of Air's single Sexy Boy, which was released 3 years earlier.
"Plug In Baby" is a featured song in the rhythm video game Guitar Hero 5.

The underneath, no big surprise
Now it's time for changing
And cleansing everything
To forget your love
My plug in baby
Crucifies my enemies
Woah, my plug in baby
In unbroken virgin realities
Is tired of living
Don't confuse
Baby you're gonna lose
Your own game
Change me
Replace the envying
To forget your love
My plug in baby
Crucifies my enemies
When I'm tired of giving
Woah, my plug in baby
In unbroken virgin realities
And tired of living
And I've seen your loving
Mine is gone
The song Plug in Baby by Muse contains lyrics that speak about a failed relationship. The first two lines indicate that the singer has finally uncovered the lies hidden beneath the surface and is now ready to move on from it. He wants to cleanse himself from the memories of this love and move on to something new. The repetition of "to forget your love" emphasizes his determination to put the past behind him.
As the song progresses, the "plug in baby" becomes an important motif. The singer mentions that this plug in baby "crucifies [his] enemies," which can be interpreted as a way of saying that it empowers him to overcome the pain and anger associated with the relationship. The plug in baby is his way of escaping the reality of his life and living in a "virgin reality," which is uncorrupted by the past. The last line, "And I've seen your loving, mine is gone," serves as the final nail in the coffin for the relationship. It suggests that the love the singer once had is no longer present and has been replaced by something more cynical and bitter.
Overall, the song appears to be a cathartic release for the singer, as he sings about his struggles with a failed relationship and the ways in which he hopes to move on.
