Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mutabaruka's song "Say" offer a complex and insightful commentary on themes of identity, freedom, and resistance. The first line, "when you remember home ETHIOPIA," speaks to the connection between African-Americans and their African roots. The mention of slaves in the following line "when you remember slaves BLACK" touches on the history of slavery and the painful legacy that continues to impact black communities to this day.

The next two lines "when you shout revolution FREEMAN, when you shout babylon DEATH" can be interpreted as a call to action towards overthrowing oppressive systems, and the consequences of remaining silent or complacent in the face of injustice. The lines "when you speak of education GET IT, when you speak of unity WADADA" emphasize the importance of education and unity in the fight for liberation. The line "when you speak of God MAN" highlights the spiritual component of the Rastafari movement which promotes a deep reverence for Haile Selassie, whom they believe to be the embodiment of God on earth.

The following line "when you see culture RELATIVE TO" touches on the idea that culture is not fixed, but instead constantly evolves and adapts to the realities of a particular historical moment. Lastly, the line "when you read all this MADNESSSSSS" points to the absurdity of the world we live in, where such injustices still exist despite the best efforts of those who struggle against them. The final line "when you think like i RASTAFARI" reflects Mutabaruka's personal philosophy and the message of the entire song, which promotes a defiance of the dominant culture and a commitment to resistance.
