Bligh
Mutiny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were sailing on stormy seas
Wishing we were back on shore in Tahiti
Captain Bligh wouldn′t let us be
Treat people like shit and that's what you get
Captain was a hard man he was asking for it
Put him in the lifeboat, said goodbye
You′re a hell of a guy
Captain Bligh

Somehow he survived to govern Sydney Town
Said he'd bring the liquor trade down
Seems things turned out the other way 'round
And the officers were pissed on Rum Rebellion
Asked the troops to expel him
Said that he hid under his bed

You′re a hell of a guy
Governor Bligh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mutiny's song Bligh tell the story of Captain William Bligh, who is most famously known for the mutiny on his ship the HMS Bounty in 1789. The first verse paints a picture of the treacherous seas they were sailing on, wishing they were back on shore in Tahiti. However, Captain Bligh was not the most sympathetic captain, treating his crew poorly and ultimately leading to their rebellion. The lines "Treat people like shit and that's what you get, Captain was a hard man he was asking for it" illustrate the conflict between the crew and the captain. The crew had had enough of Bligh's harsh treatment and decided to put him in the lifeboat and say goodbye, sarcastically calling him "a hell of a guy."

The second verse continues the story of Bligh's life after the mutiny. He somehow survived the ordeal and was later appointed as governor of Sydney Town. However, instead of bringing the liquor trade down as he had promised, things turned out the other way around and the officers were angry with him. This ultimately led to the Rum Rebellion, where troops were asked to expel Bligh from his position. The final lines of the song repeat the sarcastic line "You're a hell of a guy" but this time in reference to Bligh's governorship.

Overall, the lyrics to Bligh are a nod to the historical figure of Captain William Bligh, but also a commentary on the consequences of poor leadership and mistreatment of others.
