All the photographs that I gave you
And you can say your prayer if you need to
Or just get in line and I'll brief you
Can I meet you alone?
Another night and I'll see you
Another night and I'll be you
To hide my face
Another knife in my hands
A stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off, I'm so dirty babe
The kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes
I keep a book of the names and those
Only go so far to bury them
So deeper down we go
Just like angels do
I fall out of grace
I been it all so maybe I'd move this everyday
Another knife in my hands
A stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off, I'm so dirty babe
It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame
It's for the bodies I claim and lose
Only go so far to bury them
So deeper down we go
Down and down we go
It's down we go
It's down we go
And we all fall down
Ah, ah, ah
And we'll all dance along to the tune of your death
We'll love again
We'll laugh again
And it's better off this way
Never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
And we're all dead now
Well never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
And we're all dead now
We're dead
One more night
One more night
We'll I'll, I'll stop crying
I'll stop laughing
Well I tried, well I tried
'Cause I tried, but I lied
Well I tried
Well I tried
Well I said
Well
And we'll love again
We'll laugh again
We'll cry again
And we'll dance again
And it's better off this way, so much better off this way
I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed
Never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
And we're all dead now
The lyrics to My Chemical Romance's song "I Never Told You What I Do for a Living" offer a disturbing insight into a character who is engaged in a murderous and criminal activity. The singer tries to hide his identity, asking if he can meet the listener alone, and speaks of keeping a book of the names, only going so far to bury them. He talks about his dirty state, both physically and emotionally, and the blood on his sheets that won't come off. As the song progresses, the singer speaks of being shot in the head and dying, but also of laughter and dancing, suggesting that death may be a release from the horrors of his life.
The song seems to explore the idea of identity and the lengths to which people will go to keep their true selves hidden. The singer has created a false identity, but it is one that is tainted by the blood on his hands. He is struggling to keep up the facade, trying to scrub the blood off his sheets but failing. The chorus suggests that death may be seen as a release from the burden of living with these secrets.
The song's title is a reference to a line from the 1994 film Pulp Fiction, where Uma Thurman's character asks John Travolta's character what he does for a living. The song also references the band's previous album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, with the line "I been it all so maybe I'd move this everyday," a reference to the song "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)."

Stay out of the lie
Avoid being deceived
All the photographs that I gave you
All the lies that I told you
And you can say your prayer if you need to
If you need to feel better about this, pray for your soul
Or just get in line and I'll brief you
Follow my lead and I'll explain what's going to happen
Can I meet you alone?
I need to speak with you privately
Another night and I'll see you
The next time we meet, things will change
Another night and I'll be you
I'll put myself in your shoes
Some other way to continue
We need to find another solution
To hide my face
To conceal my identity
Another knife in my hands
I'm a killer
A stain that never comes off the sheets
The guilt of my crimes will never go away
Clean me off, I'm so dirty babe
Help me forget my sins
The kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes
My actions have permanently stained my soul
I keep a book of the names and those
I have a list of all the people I've killed
Only go so far to bury them
I only do what I have to in order to hide the evidence
So deeper down we go
The more we try to forget, the more we're consumed by our guilt
Just like angels do
We're trying to forget the pain, like angels that fall from grace
I fall out of grace
I've lost any sense of morality
I been it all so maybe I'd move this everyday
I have experienced everything there is, so maybe I will do this every day
It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame
I'm not killing for money or fame
It's for the bodies I claim and lose
I need to kill to feel alive
Down and down we go
The more we try to forget, the more we're consumed by our guilt
And we all fall down
We will all die eventually, from our sins or something else
And we'll all dance along to the tune of your death
We'll celebrate your death, like the devil himself
We'll love again
We'll keep on living, trying to forget our guilt
We'll laugh again
We'll continue with our lives, trying to be happy
And it's better off this way
It's better not to think about the past
Never again, and never again
I'll never do this again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
They executed us for our crimes
And we're all dead now
We're finally at peace
One more night
One more chance to live for the moment
Well I'll, I'll stop crying
I'll stop feeling sorry for myself
I'll stop laughing
I'll stop pretending to be happy
Well I tried, well I tried
I did my best
'Cause I tried, but I lied
I did what I thought was right, but it was wrong
And we'll cry again
We'll remember our past and feel the pain
And we'll dance again
We'll try to forget our past and move on
And it's better off this way, so much better off this way
It's better not to hold on to the past
I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed
I can't forget my past and my sins
