13. Cemetery Drive
My Chemical Romance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This night
Walk the dead
In a solitary style and crash the cemetery gates
In the dress your husband hates
Lay down
Mark the grave
Where the searchlights find us drinking by the mausoleum door
And they found you on the bathroom floor

I miss you
I miss you so far
And the collision of your kiss that made it so hard

Back home off the run
Singing songs that make you slit your wrists
It isn't that much fun
Staring down a loaded gun
So I won't stop dying
Won't stop lying
If you want I'll keep on crying
Did you get what you deserve?
Is this what you always want me for?

I miss you
I miss you so far
And the collision of your kiss that made it so hard

Way Down, way down, way down, way down
Way down, way down, way down, way down

I miss you
I miss you so far
And the collision of your kiss that made it so hard

I miss you
I miss you so far
And the collision of your kiss that made it so hard, made it so hard

Way down, way down, way down, way down
Way down, way down, way down, way down, way down

Overall Meaning

The song "Cemetery Drive" by My Chemical Romance combines elements of longing, loss, and rebellion. The lyrics paint a picture of a group of individuals walking among the dead, crashing gates and drinking by mausoleum doors. Through the eyes of the singer, we experience a deep sense of longing for someone who is gone, someone who he misses so far away. The pain of their absence is compounded by memories of an intense love affair, symbolized by the "collision of your kiss that made it so hard."

As the lyrics progress, we learn more about the singer's emotional state. They are off the run, but at home, they feel lost and alone, singing songs that make them want to slit their wrists, staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. The pain of their loss is so intense that they cannot stop dying or lying, and they offer to keep crying if the other person wants them to. The pain of the other's absence is so intense that it becomes almost an addiction, like a drug to ease the pain.

The repeated phrase "way down" at the end of the song, punctuated with the final repetition of "I miss you" emphasizes the depth of the singer's longing. And the final line, "made it so hard," underscores the intensity of the love that has been lost.

Honestly this is the song that got me hooked. I started liking My Chemical Romance because my crush did, and I wanted him to notice me. So I listened to Helena. When I heard his voice it felt like an angel was singing to me, so I kept putting on more songs. Then I started memorizing the lyrics, and then members names. I would listen to them on the bus every day. Specifically Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. So I was listening to this song and when I heard "Singing songs that make you slit your wrist. It isn't that much fun staring down a loaded gun." And it caught me off guard. And then he said "Did you get what you deserve?" And I almost started crying on the bus. I used to be really really suicidal and listening to this song made me realise that with this band I could have something to relate to, and something to let my feelings out with. Whenever I listened to them, I felt safe. The music would comfort me. And song after song I got more hooked, and more happy. And yes, occasionally I think about commuting suicide, but I know I won't try again. Because I could be afraid of life and end it, or just cry and listen to them. Honestly, it's true what they said. You only hear the music when your heart begins to break.
