The band consists of lead vocalist Gerard Way, guitarists Ray Toro, Frank Iero and bassist Mikey Way. Shortly after forming, the band signed to Eyeball Records and released their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love in 2002. They signed with Reprise Records the next year and released their major label debut Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge in 2004; the album was a commercial success and was awarded platinum status a little over a year later.

The band eclipsed their previous success with their 2006 concept album, The Black Parade, which gained generally favorable reviews among music critics. Their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, was released on November 22, 2010, to positive reviews. The band's final release in their original run were a series of singles, released over the course of five months, collected on the compilation Conventional Weapons. The band announced its break-up on March 22, 2013, one month after the final release in the Conventional Weapons series. On March 25, 2014, the band released May Death Never Stop You: The Greatest Hits (2001–2013), a greatest hits album containing material spanning their entire career, as well as some previously unreleased material.

On Halloween of 2019, the band announced a comeback show in Los Angeles, California, and fans speculated that there was more to it than just a show. On November 5, three more shows were confirmed in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. On January 29, 2020, eighteen additional dates were announced in North America.
On May 12, 2022, the band released The Foundations Of Decay, solidifying their return as a band.

I cannot overstate the sheer power of this song. In a whole album about death, about coming to grips with one's own mortality, this song that's titled "famous last words," with its chorus starting with the words "I am not afraid..." you would thing it's a line like "I am not afraid of dying," right? I felt that, I REALLY felt that. Since I began studying in the university, I’ve been unlucky in love. I realized that interacting with women has so many demands, no matter how much I try so hard to interact with women, I’m still ignored. By the way, like this song, I’m not afraid to keep living. MCR has taught me to be real and honest, to show affections, to be myself, even though I can be hated for these. Without MCR, I don’t know how I would survive these situations.

Man this hits different. One of my best friends is on the border of being sent to a mental hospital for the next three years and the thought of losing them hurts me so much. It seems like every bad day I have I always come back to this video. Every time without fail. Just absolute perfection. I use to listen to the album on repeat when it came out but never really paid attention to the lyrics of any music I listened to. Being much older now with much more experience of life and death this is completely different. Just a perfect album in so many ways. The songs, the black parade band idea, the music videos, the costumes and it all designed by Gerard. Just mind blowing what an absolute victory lap the entire saga of the album is. It's an absolute modern masterpiece.

I loved this song as a teenager when it came out, but its (along with the whole album, really) significance in my life has exponentially increased after the death of my mom in 2021 from cancer, more important now in my 30s than when i first heard it in my teens. She lived halfway across the world from where i live when she decided to tell us all about the cancer she had been living with for a long time. By the time i was able to go see her, the cancer was terminal, though we didnt know it at the time and we were cautiously optimistic. I had limited time available to take off work, so the day of my flight back i visited her for the last time and she gave me a big hug, started crying because "her boy was leaving" as she said then. We shared the biggest hug we've ever shared, and she whispered in my ear: "dont be afraid...dont be afraid to live your life". Even while everyone tried to be optimistic, in that moment a small part of me felt that those would be the last words i ever heard from her in person. My brother and i were raised by her alone and our father was never in thr picture. I flew back to where i lived at the time and two weeks later, my brother (who was still with her) messages me late at night that her situation worsened very quickly and that i should prepare to book a flight the next day. At 5 am the next morning, he calls me again and i knew before he said anything that she was gone. I have never cried in my entire life the way i did then, it was like a part of myself died. I truly havent been the same since, i dont think anyone ever is after the death of someone so close. Every day i regret coming back for something as stupid as work, but she wanted me to continue living my own life. "Dont be afraid to live your life"...i think about her last words to me every single day. I try to honor her by living it, i dont always succeed of course, im very often wracked with fear. Never of dying...of living. This album is a tremendous achievement, and i always tear up listening to this song now.

I have my son to thank for introducing me to MCR. He was 15 when this came out, which means I was 47 . He was taking his own musical journey and I went along for the ride and I'm so glad I did . Still love this album and play the CD loud as possible in the car , yep sorry still a CD not bluetooth.

It’s crazy knowing how fucked up Bob and Gerard got during finlming, bobs leg caught on fire and he still kept playing til the end coz they couldn’t reshoot, it was the black parade float actually on fire, then frank tackled Gerard and destroyed his ankle to the point G had to use a cane for a while and some of the scream scenes shown here are genuine screams of pain 😅 then Bob got gangrene, absolutely wild

mcr became my favorite band as soon as i discovered them a few years ago. their music always scratched an itch inside of me. it's just such raw human emotion. i went to their concert and had the time of my life.
a month ago my dad passed away. now many mcr songs feel like they were written just for me. can't listen to that "i see you lying next to me with words i thought i'd never speak awake and unafraid, asleep or dead" without thinking about me saying i love you to my dad when he was in a coma. maybe that's tmi but idk i just needed to ramble on here. mcr are so important to me and to so many other people. famous last words feels like a warm hug and a lesson about how to let go of it. it's like the song is telling me to give the world that same warmth my dad gave me. i miss you dad, i miss you dearly and i love you so much

This song is so bad ass. I remember when The Black Parade came out in 2006 and I thought, "How did this previously somewhat generic Emo band create such a masterpiece?" It truly is one of the best Rock albums of the last 30 years. Even though Gerard Way is no Freddie Mercury in terms of vocal range and expressive tonality and dynamics, his voice perfectly suits the music. I love the end of the song when Gerard is almost screaming "Or dead!" while singing the more hopeful and even defiant line "I am not afraid to keep on living..." Famous Last Words is the perfect album closer to a record that is essentially a meditation on death and a young life cut far too short.
