The band eclipsed their previous success with their 2006 concept album, The Black Parade, which gained generally favorable reviews among music critics. Their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, was released on November 22, 2010, to positive reviews. The band's final release in their original run were a series of singles, released over the course of five months, collected on the compilation Conventional Weapons. The band announced its break-up on March 22, 2013, one month after the final release in the Conventional Weapons series. On March 25, 2014, the band released May Death Never Stop You: The Greatest Hits (2001โ2013), a greatest hits album containing material spanning their entire career, as well as some previously unreleased material.
On Halloween of 2019, the band announced a comeback show in Los Angeles, California, and fans speculated that there was more to it than just a show. On November 5, three more shows were confirmed in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. On January 29, 2020, eighteen additional dates were announced in North America.
On May 12, 2022, the band released The Foundations Of Decay, solidifying their return as a band.

My father took me into the city
To see a marching band
He said, son, when you grow up
Would you be the savior of the broken
The beaten, and the damned?
He said, will you defeat them
Your demons and all the non-believers?
The plans that they have made?
Because one day I'll leave you
A phantom to lead you in the summer
To join the black parade
When I was a young boy
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band
He said, "Son, when you grow up
You will be the savior of the broken
Sometimes I get the feeling
She's watching over me
And other times I feel like I should go
And through it all
The rise and fall
The bodies in the streets
And when you're gone, we want you all to know
We'll carry on, we'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone, believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And in my heart I can't contain it
The anthem won't explain it
A world that sends you reeling
From decimated dreams
Your misery and hate will kill us all
So paint it black
And take it back
Let's shout it loud and clear
Defiant to the end
We hear the call
To carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone, believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
Your weary widow marches
On and on, we carry through the fears
(Oh, oh, oh)
Disappointed faces of your peers
(Oh, oh, oh)
Take a look at me
'Cause I could not care at all
Do or die
You'll never make me
Because the world
Will never take my heart
You can try
You'll never break me
We wanna know
We want to play this part
Won't explain
Or say I'm sorry
I'm unashamed
I'm gonna show my scar
Give a cheer
For all the broken
Listen here
Because it's who we are
I'm just a man
I'm not a hero
Just a boy who had to sing this song
I'm just a man
I'm not a hero
I don't care
We'll carry on
We'll carry on
And though your dead and gone, believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
Your weary widow marches on!
Do or die
You'll never make me
Because the world
Will never take my heart
You can try
You'll never break me
We wanna know
We want to play this part
We'll carry on
Do or die
You'll never make me
Because the world
Will never take my heart
You can try
You'll never break me
We wanna know
We want to play this part
We'll carry on
The lyrics to My Chemical Romance's "Welcome to the Black Parade" provide a poignant narrative on the inevitability of death and the hope that exists in the aftermath. The singer is reflecting on his life, starting with a memory of a marching band from his childhood. His father asks him if he will be the one to save those who are broken, beaten, or victimized. The singer takes it upon himself to carry this mantle, promising to defeat his demons and the non-believers who doubt his ability to do so.
As the song progresses, the singer shifts from reflecting on his own mission to the legacy he will leave behind. He believes that even in death, his memory will "carry on" and he encourages his listeners to do the same. The lyrics capture a sense of defiance and determination, as well as a hope for a better future. The line "Do or die, you'll never make me" speaks to the singer's resilience in the face of adversity.
