Outta the Band
My First Earthquake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went to the bathroom
Just to check my hair
During practice for a band
I joined on a dare
When I came back, small heart attack
From the note on the door
It said no girls allowed
Go home, we don′t want you no more

Does it mean that I'm outta the band again?
Does it mean I′m walking home alone?

Through the tenderloin alone
Knew that I would never get that boob job that you wanted me to
Knew it was the final straw,
Wouldn't hold the lollipop at the photo shoot last week
Well, I have found a better band, one that don't require men
All our songs are about the body politic
Most of them are covers
And we practice in the suburbs
And we all have multiple lovers and we′re called the Beckies

Does it mean that I′m outta the band again?
Does it mean I'm walking home alone?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of My First Earthquake's song "Outta the Band" describe the experience of the singer who, while at band practice, goes to the bathroom to check her hair but when she comes back she finds a note on the door saying "no girls allowed". The singer is taken aback and feels excluded and unwanted. She wonders if this means she's out of the band and if she'll have to walk home alone. As she walks through the Tenderloin, she reflects on the circumstances that led her to this point, including a desire to fit in by joining the band on a dare.

The experience of rejection and exclusion that the singer feels is a common theme in music, especially within punk and alternative genres. The lyrics suggest that the singer's gender may have been a factor in her exclusion from the band. The song reflects on the gendered dynamics of music scenes and the difficulties that women and non-binary people can face in trying to participate in them.

Interestingly, the singer asserts her resilience and resourcefulness in the face of this exclusion. She mentions that she has found a new band, the Beckies, where all members are women or non-binary people and the songs are about the body politic. The band practices in the suburbs and they all have multiple lovers. This represents a stark contrast to the exclusivity and machismo of the first band.
